Overview
Yokoo Sansō (横尾山荘) is a mountain lodge (yamagoya) located in the Kamikōchi area of the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, in Azumi, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It sits at an elevation of 1,620 m on the left bank of the Azusa River, at the Yokoo junction where trails from Kamikōchi split toward Mount Yari, the Hotaka massif, and Mount Chōgatake. It is roughly a three-hour-and-ten-minute walk from Kamikōchi. The lodge was founded in 1947 by Toshikazu Yamada, who also established Jōnen Hut and Ichinomata Hut. The current main building and dining hall were rebuilt in 1972, and the guest room wing was rebuilt in 2008 under the third-generation owner, Tadashi Yamada. A bathhouse called Yūyukan was completed in 1999, making Yokoo Sansō one of the few mountain lodges in the Kamikōchi area with on-site bathing facilities. The lodge operates seasonally, typically from late April to early November. It offers 30 guest rooms with a capacity of 250 guests, a shop, a dining hall, and the Yūyukan bathhouse. As of 2011, the rate was ¥9,500 per night with two meals. Nearby facilities include the Yokoo Ōhashi bridge, the Yokoo campground (100 tent sites), and a winter emergency hut. Mobile phone coverage is provided by au through a signal reflected off the Byōbu Rock from an antenna at Chōgatake Hutte. Yokoo Sansō is a key staging point for climbers and hikers in the Northern Alps, particularly those heading to Mount Yari and the Hotaka peaks. Its location at the confluence of the Yarisawa and Yokoo valleys, where the Azusa River begins, places it in a scenic area known for its beautiful larch forest and views of Byōbu Rock and the Maedake cliff. The lodge is a member of the Northern Alps Mountain Hut Friendship Association and is listed on the Kamikōchi official website.
