Spectrum News 1 Capital Region is a 24-hour regional cable-news channel operated by Charter Communications as part of the Spectrum News network. Its primary coverage area is the Capital District and surrounding parts of eastern New York, and its operations are based in Albany. The service also has a Hudson Valley-oriented subfeed, allowing programming and coverage to be adapted for a neighboring regional audience. Distribution is primarily through Spectrum cable systems, with channel placement generally associated with channel 9 but varying in some communities and in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The service developed from Time Warner Cable's earlier local-origination operations. Before the dedicated news channel launched, the cable operator used its channel 9 position to rebroadcast the 6:00 p.m. newscast of Albany CBS affiliate WRGB. Favorable audience performance relative to a competing early-evening newscast helped support the decision to create an in-house, continuously operating news channel. The resulting service launched on October 11, 2002, under the name Capital News 9. Its debut came later than originally planned because of infrastructure and staffing delays. The service originated in Time Warner Cable's local cable operations in the Albany area. Weather programming was produced from Syracuse, while Albany-based staff supported shared broadcasts and political programming such as Capital Tonight. The channel's distribution increased in August 2006 when Time Warner Cable added eastern New York systems obtained from Adelphia Communications. In April 2008, the channel began a full-time audio simulcast on WUAM, an Albany-area radio station. That arrangement ended in 2014 when both sides agreed not to renew it. A major naming change occurred in March 2010, when Capital News 9 became YNN, meaning Your News Now. The change aligned the Capital Region outlet with related Time Warner Cable news channels, especially services in Buffalo and Rochester. In April of that year, the channel introduced a Hudson Valley subfeed under the YNN Hudson Valley name. This structure allowed the operator to retain a broad regional news operation while providing more geographically specific coverage. In December 2013, the channel was renamed Time Warner Cable News Capital Region. The change was part of a standardized identity applied to the provider's regional news services, accompanied by a new graphics system and music package. The Hudson Valley subfeed received a corresponding Time Warner Cable News name. Charter Communications' 2016 acquisition of Time Warner Cable changed the channel's corporate and consumer-brand context.
