Overview

Yncoris GmbH & Co. KG (stylised YNCORIS) is a German industrial services company and the site operator of the Chemiepark Knapsack chemical park in the Hürth district of Knapsack, near Cologne. It provides a broad range of industry- and chemistry-related services to the companies located on the site, including plant planning and construction, maintenance and repair, safety and security services, environmental protection, logistics, site utilities and infrastructure services. The company traces its origins to the Hoechst AG works at Knapsack and was spun off as an independent entity in 1998 under the name InfraServ GmbH & Co. Knapsack KG. It adopted the name Yncoris on 1 June 2019. Yncoris operates the shared infrastructure of the chemical park: it supplies electricity, fresh water, fully demineralised water, steam, natural gas, compressed air, instrument air, oxygen and nitrogen through a pipeline system, and distributes process gases and liquids such as chlorine, caustic soda, hydrogen, hydrochloric acid, ethylene, propylene, iodine chloride and phosphorus that are produced by the resident companies. Wastewater treatment is handled by the Abwasser-Gesellschaft Knapsack GmbH, founded in 1929 and today 67.4% owned by Yncoris. Transport and container handling are provided through KCG Knapsack Cargo GmbH, and the company also offers engineering services nationwide through its subsidiaries. Beyond the site, Yncoris provides services regionally and nationally across Germany, and has worked on international projects such as the construction of a polysilicon plant in Ukraine. According to its own figures, the company employed around 1,110 people and 80 apprentices in 2023. Its registered office is in Hürth, and its general partner is InfraServ Verwaltungs-GmbH in Frankfurt am Main, a subsidiary of Celanese GmbH. The limited partnership interests are held by Hoechst successor companies active at the site: LyondellBasell (37%), Celanese (Celanese GmbH 22%, Celanese Chemicals Europe GmbH 5%), Clariant (21%) and Vinnolit (15%).

History

The history of Yncoris began with the construction of a calcium cyanamide factory by the German Carbide Corporation (Deutsche Karbid-Aktiengesellschaft, later Hoechst AG), which started operations in Knapsack in 1907. Over the following decades the Hoechst group grew into an international chemical giant. In the early 1990s, the dissolution of Hoechst was initiated: after being converted into a holding company, Hoechst AG merged with Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis S.A., headquartered in Strasbourg. The Hoechst works at Hürth-Knapsack became the Chemiepark Knapsack, and the remaining units of the Hoechst group were turned into independent companies. One of these was InfraServ Knapsack, the former service unit of Hoechst. On 4 February 1998, InfraServ GmbH & Co. Knapsack KG was entered in the commercial register in Brühl, and on 1 January 1998 the company began operations as a spin-off of Hoechst AG group units at the Hürth-Knapsack works. The general partner was InfraServ Verwaltungs GmbH in Frankfurt, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoechst AG. In the course of the merger of Hoechst and Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis in 1999, Hoechst AG transferred its shares to Celanese AG. The general partner of InfraServ Knapsack is InfraServ Verwaltungs-GmbH in Frankfurt am Main, a subsidiary of Celanese GmbH. The limited partnership interests are held by various other successor companies of Hoechst AG that took over corresponding business activities in the Chemiepark Knapsack: LyondellBasell (37%), Celanese (Celanese GmbH 22%, Celanese Chemicals Europe GmbH 5%), Clariant (21%) and Vinnolit (15%). InfraServ GmbH & Co. Knapsack KG founded two wholly owned subsidiaries on 20 May 2003 (Personal Transfair GmbH) and the following day (Ausbildungsstätte Rhein-Erft-Akademie GmbH). A third followed on 20 November 2007 with InfraServ Engineering Services GmbH, which offers engineering services throughout Germany; it was renamed InfraServ Knapsack OnSite Engineering in 2012. The Abwasser-Gesellschaft Knapsack GmbH has existed since 29 November 1929 and is today 67.4% owned by Yncoris. KCG Knapsack Cargo GmbH was founded on 1 October 2001 and is 23% owned by Yncoris. EBS-Kraftwerk GmbH has existed since 21 November 2003 and is half-owned by Yncoris. The Rhein-Erft-Akademie GmbH was transferred in March 2010 to the nationwide Stiftung Bildung & Handwerk in Paderborn, and PersonalTransfair also went to the foundation on 1 January 2015. On 1 June 2019, the former InfraServ Knapsack was renamed Yncoris, with no other changes. The company describes itself today as one of Germany's leading industrial service providers, with locations throughout the Rhine-Ruhr region. According to its own figures, it employed 1,110 people and 80 apprentices in 2023.
