Overview
Ylym (Turkmen for "science") is a Turkmen state scientific publishing house based in Ashgabat. It was founded in February 1952 as the publishing house of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR, continuing the print output previously issued by the Turkmen branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In November 1963 it was merged with the Turkmenistan publishing house and placed under the State Committee for Publishing of the Turkmen SSR, a period in which its output fell sharply; on 1 October 1966 it returned to the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR. After Turkmenistan gained independence, it continued to operate under the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan. The publisher's output is scholarly and scientific. Between the 1950s and 1980s it issued 20,616 accounting-and-publishing sheets of printed matter, of which 17,268 sheets were books and pamphlets. Its catalogue includes fundamental monographs such as the two-volume History of the Turkmen SSR (1957), the History of Agriculture and the Peasantry of Soviet Turkmenistan (1979), and the six-volume History of Turkmen Literature (1967–1982). It also published scientific journals including the Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (in physical-technical, chemical and geological sciences; biological sciences; and social sciences series), the Works of the South Turkmenistan Archaeological Complex Expedition (from volume 3), and Problems of Desert Development. In addition, it produced thematic collections, dictionaries, reference works and popular-science pamphlets. Ylym remains active as a state-owned publisher under the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, with its institutional page hosted on the Turkmenistan science portal. Its role is to publish the academy's research and related scholarly literature in Turkmenistan.
