Overview
Yeosu Munhwa Broadcasting Co., Ltd. — commonly known as Yeosu MBC (여수MBC) — is a regional television and radio broadcaster based in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It operates as an affiliate of the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) network, producing and transmitting local news, current-affairs programming, entertainment, and cultural events for the eastern Jeollanam-do region, including Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang and Goheung. Its corporate history traces back to Namhae Broadcasting Co. (남해방송(주)), which launched an AM radio station in Yeosu's Jungang-dong in August 1970. In September 1971 the company changed its name to the present Yeosu Munhwa Broadcasting Co., Ltd. Over the following decades Yeosu MBC expanded from AM radio into FM radio and television. Music FM opened in August 1985, Standard FM in February 1988, and television in November 1987, with TV relay stations established at Gubongsan in Yeosu and Cheonhwangshan in Suncheon. The broadcaster built its current headquarters building in November 1991 and opened a TV studio in Suncheon's Jorye-dong in December 1995, later moving its radio studio there as well. It launched digital TV in December 2005, ended analogue broadcasting in October 2012, and introduced HD production and relay equipment during the 2010s, including participation in coverage of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and the 2019 Gwangju World Aquatics Championships. Today Yeosu MBC's output includes the evening news programme News Desk (뉴스데스크), the regional magazine show About Our Neighbourhood (어바웃 우리동네), the talk programme News & Issue (뉴스&이슈), and music and travel programmes such as Trot Class (트로트클라쓰) and Island Village Travel Agency (섬마을 여행사). The station also organises cultural events and K-pop concerts in the Yeosu, Suncheon, Gwangyang and Goheung area, and operates radio services alongside its television channel. It marked its 50th anniversary in August 2020 and closed its AM service in March 2023. As an MBC affiliate, Yeosu MBC combines locally produced programming with content from the national MBC network.

In September 1971 the company adopted its present name, Yeosu Munhwa Broadcasting Co., Ltd. (여수문화방송(주)), aligning it with the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) network. The station expanded into FM and television during the 1980s. Music FM began broadcasting in August 1985, followed by TV relay stations in August 1984 at Gubongsan in Yeosu and Cheonhwangshan in Suncheon, and further TV relay sites in February 1986 and June 1988. In November 1991 the broadcaster completed its current headquarters building on a 13,000-pyeong site with a 1,600-pyeong, five-storey-above-ground and one-below-ground structure. In the 1990s Yeosu MBC broadened its production base and international ties. It opened a radio studio in Suncheon's Haengdong in June 1993 and signed a friendship and cooperation agreement with Japan's KBC in July 1993. An outdoor performance venue was completed within the headquarters grounds in November 1998, used for outdoor concerts and live broadcasts, and the company's website opened in March 1998. Digital transition defined the 2000s and 2010s. The TV main production facilities were separated from the transmission room in August 2002, and the Standard FM transmission point moved from Cheonhwangshan to Namsan in September 2004. Digital TV (DTV) launched in December 2005, and a TV auxiliary station changed channels from Cheonhwangshan (Ch7) to Namsan (Ch43) in August 2006. Standard FM transmission from Gubongsan in Yeosu began in November 2007 at 107.1 MHz and 100 W, and an HD system for TV production was built in March 2008.
