Overview

The Ybbstaler Hütte is a mountain shelter (Schutzhütte) belonging to the Austria Section of the Österreichischer Alpenverein (Austrian Alpine Club). It sits at 1,343 metres above sea level in the Ybbstaler Alps of Lower Austria, roughly three and a half kilometres north-west of the Dürrenstein. The hut is staffed and catered from May to October and offers four room camps and 43 mattress camps for overnight guests. It holds the Alpine Club environmental seal (Umweltgütesiegel für Alpenvereinshütten). The hut can be reached from both Lunz am See and the municipality of Göstling. Originally built as a hunting lodge, the structure was leased by the Ybbstaler Section of the DuOeAV in 1920/21 and subsequently converted. Summer catering began only in 1925, and year-round operation followed in 1933. In 1950 the Ybbstaler Section merged into the Austria Section of the ÖAV, which took over the hut. A general renovation was carried out in 1987, and the hut reopened in May 1989. As a base for hikers, the Ybbstaler Hütte serves as the starting point or intermediate station for two high-alpine routes: the Drei-Seen-Tour and the Alpinweg Hochkar-Dürrenstein. Nearby destinations include the Noten (1,640 m), the hut's local mountain about an hour's walk away, and the Dürrenstein (1,878 m), roughly two hours away. The hut is a commercial hospitality operation within the Austrian Alpine Club network, offering food, lodging and information for visitors to the region.

History

The Ybbstaler Hütte was originally erected as a hunting lodge. In 1920/21 it was leased by the Ybbstaler Section of the DuOeAV (Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein) and subsequently converted for use as a mountain hut. Summer catering began in 1925, and from 1933 the hut operated year-round. In 1950 the Ybbstaler Section was absorbed into the Austria Section of the ÖAV (Österreichischer Alpenverein), which thereby took over the hut. A general renovation (Generalsanierung) was undertaken in 1987, and the hut was able to reopen in May 1989. Today it remains a staffed shelter of the Austria Section, open from May to October, and carries the environmental seal for Alpine Club huts.
