Overview
Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia (PENYAYANG) is a Malaysian charity foundation established in 2000. It was incorporated to receive donations and subscriptions and to administer funds for education, public welfare, research, health, medical and other charitable purposes for the benefit of needy Malaysians, irrespective of colour, race or creed. The foundation's stated aspiration is to bring cheer and joy to the less fortunate and disadvantaged. PENYAYANG was founded by the late YABhg Tun Endon Mahmood, wife of Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister, YABhg Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Tun Endon was passionate about community work and the arts, and she championed the Malaysia Batik: Crafted for the World Movement, a long-term vehicle for championing the Malaysian batik industry. Having been stricken by breast cancer herself, she set up Penyayang Pesakit Kanser to support cancer patients and their families. Following her death on 20 October 2005, her daughter Pn. Nori Abdullah became Chairman of PENYAYANG, continuing her mother's legacy through the foundation's many activities and programmes. The foundation's work spans community welfare, the promotion of Malaysian culture, arts and heritage, and health-related support. Its cancer support arm, Penyayang Pesakit Kanser, extends care, comfort, consolation and compassion to cancer patients, survivors and their families. It operates Positive Image centres, with outlets at the National Cancer Institute (Institut Kanser Negara) in Putrajaya, Putrajaya Hospital, Seri Kembangan in Selangor, and Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras in Kuala Lumpur. These centres provide services and support to those affected by cancer. PENYAYANG also engages in cultural and heritage initiatives, including batik-related programmes connected to the Malaysia Batik movement. The foundation operates from Wisma Penyayang and offers space rental at its premises. It relies on donations, subscriptions and support from well-wishers and caring Malaysians to carry out its charitable mission. As a non-profit non-governmental organisation, it is not listed on any stock exchange and does not have commercial shareholders.
