Yangwang U8 Rollover and Smart-Driving Tunnel Rear-End Collision Spark Safety Controversy
After its launch, the Yangwang U8 has been involved in several controversies: a test-drive hill-climb rollover, to which BYD indirectly responded that the driver had operated the vehicle improperly; first-batch owners got stuck after taking delivery; and in 2026 a U8 using smart driving rear-ended another vehicle in a tunnel, with an official investigation saying the system was normal and the owner fully responsible. The owner questioned the tunnel recognition and braking strategy and demanded raw data. The brand’s responses sparked discussion about the safety of million-yuan-class off-road vehicles and the determination of responsibility in smart driving.
