Overview

Yanai Store (株式会社ヤナイストアー) was a Japanese regional supermarket chain headquartered in Otonemachi, Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. It was founded in December 1972 and incorporated in June 1974, originating from the Otonemachi Shopping Center in Maebashi. The company operated a chain of supermarkets primarily in Maebashi and Takasaki cities, and was a regular member of the Japan Supermarket Association (JSA). At its peak, Yanai Store operated multiple stores under the Yanai Store and Value banners. However, facing a sluggish economy, intensifying competition from rival chains, and the logistical impact of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the company suspended operations on July 28, 2011, with liabilities of approximately 1.4 billion yen. At the time of suspension, it operated five stores. The former store sites were subsequently taken over by other retailers such as Shimizu Super, Kawachi Drug, and Trial. On July 10, 2019, the Maebashi District Court issued a decision to commence bankruptcy proceedings, and the corporate entity was dissolved on August 18, 2020. Yanai Store remains a notable example of a regional supermarket that struggled amid structural changes in the Japanese retail sector.

History

Yanai Store was founded in December 1972 and incorporated in June 1974. Its origins trace back to the Otonemachi Shopping Center in Otonemachi, Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. The company developed a chain of supermarkets centered on Maebashi and Takasaki cities, operating under the Yanai Store and Value names. It was a regular member of the Japan Supermarket Association (JSA). Over the years, Yanai Store expanded to multiple locations, including stores in Maebashi, Takasaki, Gunma Town (now part of Takasaki), and Fujioka. Some stores were originally branded as "Value" and later rebranded to Yanai Store. The company also had an affiliated company, Ahead Corporation, involved in food wholesale and logistics. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, the company faced a difficult business environment: a prolonged economic downturn dampened consumer spending, competitors opened new stores aggressively, and the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 severely disrupted logistics. As a result, Yanai Store suspended operations on July 28, 2011, with total liabilities of approximately 1.4 billion yen. At the time of suspension, it operated five stores. After the business suspension, the former store sites were gradually taken over by other retailers, including Shimizu Super, Kawachi Drug, Trial, Freshe, Maruedo Drug, and Yaoko. Notably, the Hakoda store site in Maebashi was redeveloped, and during construction, the Maebata Village West II archaeological site (Heian-period rice paddies) was excavated in 2000 with the cooperation of Yanai Store. On July 10, 2019, the Maebashi District Court issued a decision to commence bankruptcy proceedings against Yanai Store. The corporate entity was dissolved on August 18, 2020, marking the formal end of the company.
