History
Yamamoto Industries, Ltd. was founded in May 1946 by Soyo Yamamoto as a sole proprietorship named Yamamoto-gumi in Tsukita, Yahata City (now part of Kitakyushu), as part of a measure to address unemployment at the Yahata Steel Works (now Nippon Steel's Kyushu Works Yahata Area). In July 1947, the company began on-site work at the Yahata Steel Works, initially repairing freight cars used for internal transport, and later taking on contract construction, contract work, and routine production tasks. In January 1948, it borrowed a factory in Hitotsueda, Tobata City, from Yahata Steel Works and started operations, initially manufacturing daily necessities, agricultural machinery, and buckets from thin steel sheets. In November 1948, the business was incorporated as Yamamoto Kousakusho Co., Ltd. with capital of 3 million yen, with Soyo Yamamoto as the first president. Around the same time, it received its first order for steel drums from Yahata Steel Works. In April 1949, a drum factory was completed within the Hitotsueda plant, marking a full-scale entry into drum manufacturing. In July 1950, the company received orders for drums for the U.S. military's special procurement, becoming one of the nation's leading drum manufacturers. In March 1951, a Tokyo liaison office (now Tokyo Branch) was opened. In March 1955, Akiko Yamamoto became president. In March 1961, the head office and factory were fully relocated to Kawashiro 1-chome, Tobata Ward. In July 1961, an Osaka branch was opened. In June 1962, the company received permission for Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS Z 1601 Class 1) for steel drums. In May 1964, it began on-site work (steel slab conditioning, etc.) at Sumitomo Metal Industries' Kokura Steel Works (now Nippon Steel's Kyushu Works Yahata Area). In October 1965, it delivered its first dust collector to Ube Industries' Kanda Cement Plant. In October 1966, it absorbed Shinkyu Toko Kogyo and established the dust collector division (now Engineering Department). In January 1969, it signed a technical tie-up with Hapman for tubular conveyors and began manufacturing and selling them. In April 1975, Yuzo Yamamoto became president. In November 1976, Kyushu Wheel Industry Co., Ltd. was established as a joint venture with Topy Industries. In October 1977, it began on-site work at Kyushu Wheel Industry's Kanda office. In May 1987, due to the widening of the Wakato Bridge, the head office and factory were fully relocated to Mekari, Yahatahigashi Ward, becoming a state-of-the-art computer-controlled factory at the time. In October 1989, it received its first order for periodic maintenance work from Ube Industries' Kanda Cement Plant. In May 1990, it signed a technology transfer agreement with HammerTek and began manufacturing and selling Super Elbow. In July 1992, it established an office within Mitsubishi Materials' Kyushu Plant and fully entered cement plant repair work. In December 1992, the Kanda office was established, contracting tire and wheel assembly work from Topy Industries' Kanda Plant. In May 1999, it became the first domestic drum manufacturer to introduce a helium-based airtightness testing device for 200L drums at its head office factory, strengthening quality assurance. It was also selected as the steelwork contractor for Ube Industries' Kanda and Isa cement plants. In March 2000, it obtained ISO 9002:1994 and JIS Z 9902:1998 quality system certification for the drum business at the head office factory. In October 2001, the Machinery Department, which handles equipment maintenance for cement plants, was separated and established. In October 2004, it took over the drum business from Sansai Container Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and established the Omuta office. In May 2005, it delivered a bag filter dust collector for the kiln exhaust gas treatment facility at Taiheiyo Cement's Kumagaya Plant, and the performance was highly evaluated, leading to expanded orders from the cement industry. In November 2009, it introduced a helium-based airtightness testing device for small cans at the head office factory (the only one in Japan for small cans). In May 2012, Kazuo Yamamoto became president. In March 2015, a Hanoi representative office was opened. In March 2018, ISO 9001 was renewed (ISO 9001:2015, JIS Q 9001:2015). In April 2023, Sun Techno Co., Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary through acquisition of all shares. In February 2024, Sun Techno Co., Ltd. was integrated through an absorption-type company split. In January 2025, it signed a technology transfer agreement with Nagata Engineering Co., Ltd. and began manufacturing and selling fluidized bed separators and air table separators.
