Overview

YALI Network Jigawa is the Jigawa State chapter of the YALI Network, the digital public diplomacy component of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), the United States government's signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. YALI itself is organized around three components, of which the YALI Network is the online, open-to-all membership arm; the Mandela Washington Fellowship is its flagship in-person exchange program. The Jigawa community is described in public data as a community of young professionals in Jigawa State, Nigeria, and it operates under the umbrella of the wider YALI Network rather than as a separate commercial company. The YALI Network provides free tools and resources to help young African leaders develop the skills and connections they need to become a positive force for change in their communities. Members gain access to more than 25 online courses and video vignette series covering topics such as human rights, women's and girls' rights, small business growth, networking, public speaking, and mental health and wellness. The Network also shares policy-based information and runs public engagement campaigns that promote U.S. policy goals in Africa, including good governance, mitigating public health risks, and fostering entrepreneurship. As a state-level community, YALI Network Jigawa functions as a local node for members in Jigawa State to connect with one another, access YALI's online curriculum, and take part in Network campaigns and opportunities. It is part of a continent-wide community that reaches young leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa, extending the reach of YALI beyond the limited number of participants who can attend in-person exchange programs such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Because YALI Network Jigawa is a community within a U.S. government initiative rather than a commercial enterprise, it does not sell products or services. Its "offerings" are membership, free online courses and videos, networking, and information about opportunities. Its parent brand, YALI, is owned and funded by the U.S. Department of State, and the Network's public-facing website is yali.state.gov.

History

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is the United States' signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. It is organized around three components, one of which is the YALI Network. The digital YALI Network was established as a public diplomacy tool to help the United States expand beyond the reach of in-person exchange programs. Rather than relying on traditional messaging alone, the Network shares online policy-based information to reach, engage, and mobilize wider audiences. The Network's public engagement campaigns promote U.S. policy goals in Africa, such as promoting good governance, mitigating public health risks, and fostering entrepreneurship. These initiatives help young African leaders develop the skills and connections needed to advance these goals, driving progress in their states. The collaboration is framed as benefiting both America and Africa by creating stronger partnerships, enhancing mutual prosperity, and ensuring a more stable and secure global environment. YALI's flagship in-person program is the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Since its inception in 2014, the Fellowship has brought nearly 7,200 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. Fellows are between the ages of 25 and 35 and are accomplished leaders with established records of promoting innovation and positive impact in their communities and countries. Each year, up to 700 Fellows participate in six-week Leadership Institutes studying business, civic engagement, or public management at U.S. colleges and universities. After the Institutes, Fellows convene for a Summit, and a competitive group continues to a Professional Development Experience. YALI Network Jigawa represents the local, state-level expression of the YALI Network in Jigawa State, Nigeria. Public data describes it as a community of young professionals in Jigawa state. As part of the Network, members in Jigawa can access the same free online courses and video vignette series available across the continent, including courses on human rights, women's and girls' rights, small business growth, networking, public speaking, and mental health and wellness. The community thus serves as a local node connecting Jigawa's young professionals to YALI's broader mission and resources.
