Overview

Yager Development GmbH is a privately held German video-game developer headquartered in Berlin. The studio was founded in 1999 by five friends from East Berlin: Timo Ullmann, Uwe Beneke, Roman Golka, Philipp Schellbach, and Mathias Wiese. Several of the founders had previously worked at the Babelsberg development company Terra Tools; Yager and Radon Labs subsequently emerged from that broader local development environment. The company’s first internally developed game was Yager, a combat-flight and action title released in 2003 and published in the United States in 2004 under the name Aerial Strike: Low Altitude - High Stakes. The studio later adopted the capitalized form YAGER in some corporate communications to distinguish the company from its first game. Its international profile expanded substantially with Spec Ops: The Line, released in June 2012. Developed as a military third-person shooter, the game was notable for using the conventions of the genre to explore moral injury, responsibility, violence, and the psychological consequences of war. It received strong critical attention for its writing, presentation, and willingness to challenge the expectations associated with commercial military shooters. At the 2012 German Developer Awards, the title won five awards, including Best Action Game, Best German Game, Best Storyline, Best Graphics, and Best Console Game; Yager was also recognized as Germany’s Best Studio. Yager subsequently became involved in several large-scale co-development projects. At E3 2014, it was announced that the studio had taken over development of Dead Island 2 from Techland. The project did not proceed with Yager: in July 2015, publisher and rights holder Deep Silver ended the relationship, citing creative differences. Around the same period, Yager announced a collaboration with Six Foot on Dreadnought, a space-combat game published by Grey Box. Dreadnought launched on PlayStation 4 in 2017 and on PC in 2018, and Yager received a 2017 German Developer Award for technical achievement associated with the project. The studio also expanded into self-publishing. In 2019, it announced The Cycle, a competitive player-versus-player-versus-environment shooter, for Early Access through the Epic Games Store. The project underwent a major design change in 2021, shifting from its initial looter-shooter structure toward an extraction-shooter format. It was relaunched as The Cycle: Frontier and released in June 2022 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game was the first project in Yager’s history to be both developed and published by the studio, although it was later discontinued. Tencent first acquired a minority interest in Yager in 2020 and increased its ownership to a majority stake in June 2021. Yager has continued to operate independently under Tencent’s investment. In January 2024, the studio introduced a new logo, website, corporate identity, and communication strategy. The rebranding also highlighted a broader portfolio of co-development work, including collaboration with Funcom on Dune: Awakening and with Sharkmob on Exoborne. Yager remains a Berlin-based developer with a focus on original intellectual property, co-development, action games, and online experiences.

History

Yager Development was established in Berlin in 1999 by Timo Ullmann, Uwe Beneke, Roman Golka, Philipp Schellbach, and Mathias Wiese, five friends from East Berlin. The founders had previously worked at Terra Tools, a developer based in Babelsberg. This background placed Yager within the post-reunification German development scene, where small teams were beginning to establish independent studios and original intellectual property. Yager’s first game, Yager, was released in 2003 and combined aerial combat with action-game elements. Its United States release followed in 2004 under the title Aerial Strike: Low Altitude - High Stakes. The distinction between the game and the studio later led the company to use YAGER in capital letters in corporate contexts. During its early years, the studio developed its own projects while also taking on work for external partners. The company’s breakthrough came with Spec Ops: The Line, released in June 2012. Although presented within the framework of a military third-person shooter, the game deliberately questioned the genre’s conventional treatment of combat. Its story and staging confronted players with ethically difficult situations and the psychological consequences of violence. The title was critically praised internationally and performed strongly at the 2012 German Developer Awards, where it won five prizes. Yager itself was named Best Studio in Germany that year. Yager later pursued a mixture of original development and co-development. At E3 2014, the studio was announced as the developer of Dead Island 2, replacing Techland. The relationship with Deep Silver ended in July 2015 after the parties disagreed over the direction of the project. Yager also worked with Six Foot on Dreadnought, a space-combat game published by Grey Box. Dreadnought reached PlayStation 4 in 2017 and PC in 2018, and Yager received a German Developer Award for technical achievement in 2017. In 2019, Yager announced The Cycle, its first project to be developed and published by the studio itself. Initially conceived as a PvPvE looter shooter, the game entered Early Access through the Epic Games Store following its Gamescom announcement. Yager substantially redesigned the project in 2021, moving it toward an extraction-shooter format. The result, The Cycle: Frontier, launched on Steam and the Epic Games Store in June 2022. Tencent became an investor in Yager in 2020 through a minority stake and increased its ownership to a majority position in June 2021. Despite the change in ownership, Yager has continued to present itself as an independently operated studio. In January 2024, the company announced a broad rebrand involving its logo, website, visual identity, and external communications. The studio used the rebrand to present both its original projects and its co-development activities, including work with Funcom on Dune: Awakening and with Sharkmob on Exoborne. Yager remains headquartered in Berlin and continues to operate as a developer of original and partner-led video-game projects.
