Overview

Xalet refugi Pere Carné is a mountain refuge and small hospitality brand located at 1,490 metres altitude in La Molina, in the municipality of Alp, Baixa Cerdanya, in the Catalan Pyrenees of Spain. It sits in the Sitjar neighbourhood, close to the ski slopes, and presents itself not as a hotel but as "a refuge with soul" — a simple, welcoming base for hikers, cyclists, skiers and travellers who want to rest and reconnect with nature. It is roughly two hours from Barcelona. The refuge opened on 6 November 1955, promoted by the Agrupació Excursionista Terra i Mar de Sabadell, one of the first refuges in La Molina. In 1970 that entity became part of the Unió Excursionista de Sabadell (UES). In 1987 the UES renamed the refuge "Pere Carné" in honour of Pere Carné Serra, a founding member of the Terra i Mar association, promoter and patron of the refuge, and its president between 1937–1939 and 1958–1960. In April 2002 the refuge passed into private hands while keeping its original name. Today the refuge offers around sixty places, with double beds, bunk beds and combinations, and mountain views from every room. It also has the Sala Moncogua, a bright space used for yoga, meditation and spiritual retreats, and it provides homemade, natural food. It is described by the Viajar supplement of El Periódico as one of the ten best ski hotels at the foot of the slopes. It is currently run by Laura and Manel, who left the city more than thirty years ago to live in the mountains.

History

The Xalet refugi Pere Carné opened on 6 November 1955 as one of the first mountain refuges in La Molina, created by the Agrupació Excursionista Terra i Mar de Sabadell for hikers and mountain lovers. In 1970 the association became part of the Unió Excursionista de Sabadell (UES). In 1987 the UES renamed the refuge "Pere Carné" in honour of Pere Carné Serra, a founding member of the Terra i Mar association, promoter and patron of the refuge, and its president between 1937 and 1939 and again between 1958 and 1960. He was also an active organiser of climbing, hiking and skiing activities. In April 2002 the refuge passed into private hands but kept its original name. It has sixty places and serves as a base for skiing and hiking in the Cerdanya mountains. According to the Viajar supplement of El Periódico, it is considered one of the ten best ski hotels at the foot of the slopes. Today it is run by Laura and Manel, who more than thirty years ago left the noise of the city for the silence of the mountain, welcoming hikers, cyclists, skiers and travellers.
