In 1918, clinical research at the Babies' Dispensary and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, USA, demonstrated that the SMA (Synthetic Milk Adapted) formula could substitute for breastfeeding, and in 1921 the first commercial production and distribution of SMA marked the birth of the US infant formula industry. SMA reached the UK and the Philippines in 1925. In 1933 carotene was added to SMA in amounts close to those in breast milk, and Wyeth became a major global supplier of carotene. Iron was added to SMA in 1942, and in 1956 improved labelling and packaging made SMA the first in the industry to print an expiry date. In 1961 Wyeth developed the first commercially sold formula for newborns and full-term infants with a whey-to-casein ratio of 6:4, closer to breast milk, along with demineralisation technology. In 1971 Wyeth was the first formula maker to use a fat blend to mimic fatty acids in breast milk. In 1982 it launched the older-infant formula 健兒樂, and in 1989 nucleotides were added to Wyeth infant formula. In 1993 it launched 幼兒樂 follow-up formula for children aged 1 to 3. In 1996 it launched anti-regurgitation AR formula in many countries and added long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids from pure vegetable sources to S-26 LBW; in 1997 it launched S-26 HMF for low-birth-weight infants and a lactose-free formula for lactose-intolerant infants. In 1998 Wyeth launched the Gold series, its first infant formula based on premium whey protein, and 金裝學兒樂® growing-up formula for children aged 3 and above. In 2000 it launched 金裝健兒樂® for infants aged 6 to 12 months, and in 2001 金裝幼兒樂® with AA and DHA for children aged 1 to 3. In 2002 it launched Gold series infant formula containing alpha-lactalbumin, HA formula based on partially hydrolysed whey protein, and 金裝學兒樂® with AA and DHA for children aged 3 and above. In 2006 Wyeth became the first nutrition company globally to successfully add lutein to its products, including 金裝幼兒樂®, 金裝健兒樂® and 金裝學兒樂®. In 2009 Pfizer acquired Wyeth, and Wyeth's nutrition division became one of nine operating divisions. In 2010 惠氏®金裝膳兒加® was launched for picky-eating children aged 1 and above, and the Gold series introduced an all-round nutrition upgrade with the Brofacters System™. In 2011 newly packaged 惠氏®倍力加® was launched, providing milk- and soy-based nutritional supplements for adults. Separately, the brand's customer-service page states that the Wyeth Mama Club was established in 1989 as a bridge to customers, offering services and activities covering Wyeth Nutrition products, infant and toddler care, prenatal care and personal hygiene.
