Overview

Wydawnictwo Słowo Prawdy ("Word of Truth" Publishing House) is the publishing arm of the Baptist Christian Church in Poland (Kościół Chrześcijan Baptystów w RP), headquartered in Warsaw. It publishes books on biblical, theological, evangelistic and historical themes, and has been a significant supplier of evangelical Christian literature in Polish for over six decades. The publishing house holds legal personality under a regulation of the Minister of Administration and Digitization dated 13 December 2012. The publisher was particularly active during the era of the Polish People's Republic (1947–1989), when its output was constrained by paper rationing, limited access to printing facilities and state censorship. Despite these obstacles, it issued Polish translations of many evangelical bestsellers, including popular works by Billy Graham. Its first books appeared in 1960, although a 1959 hymnal, Głos wiary. Śpiewnik dla Zborów Pańskich, was published under the imprint "Wydawnictwo Polskiego Kościoła Chrześcijan Baptystów" without the Słowo Prawdy name. Key figures involved in the publishing house between 1960 and 1989 included Michał Stankiewicz, Konstanty Wiazowski, Zdzisław Pawlik and Krzysztof Bednarczyk. Over the decades the catalogue has included hymnals, Bible study guides, theological works, devotional calendars, evangelistic tracts and translations of international evangelical authors such as William Barclay, Billy Graham, Tim LaHaye, John Stott, Corrie ten Boom and Basilea Schlink. The publisher remains active and is associated with the website dlajezusa.pl.

History

Wydawnictwo Słowo Prawdy is the publishing house of the Baptist Christian Church in Poland, based in Warsaw. Its origins trace to the late 1950s, when the church began issuing literature under the imprint "Wydawnictwo Polskiego Kościoła Chrześcijan Baptystów." The first book bearing the Słowo Prawdy name appeared in 1960: a third, revised and expanded edition of the hymnal Głos wiary. Śpiewnik dla Zborów Pańskich. A 1959 edition of the same hymnal had been published without the Słowo Prawdy name. During the Polish People's Republic, the publisher's activity was heavily regulated. Paper allocations, restricted access to printing plants and state censorship limited what could be produced. Nevertheless, the house was notably active and became a key channel for Polish translations of evangelical literature from abroad, including works by Billy Graham and other international authors. Between 1960 and 1989, the people most closely associated with its work were Michał Stankiewicz, Konstanty Wiazowski, Zdzisław Pawlik and Krzysztof Bednarczyk. The catalogue from the communist era reflects a broad evangelical publishing programme. In the 1960s it issued hymnals, Bible guides such as Henry Halley's Przewodnik biblijny, translations of Billy Graham, and works by Emil Brunner, John Flavel and others. The 1970s saw titles by Tim LaHaye, William Barclay, Keith Miller and George Verwer, along with the annual Kalendarz Słowa Prawdy. The 1980s were dominated by William Barclay's New Testament commentaries, further Billy Graham translations, and books by John Stott, Corrie ten Boom, Basilea Schlink and John F. MacArthur Jr. The publisher also produced devotional calendars and materials for evangelism and church life. After the fall of communism in 1989, the publishing house continued its mission under the new legal and economic conditions. On 13 December 2012, the Minister of Administration and Digitization granted it legal personality by regulation. The publisher remains active and is associated with the website dlajezusa.pl.
