Overview

WWF Madagascar is the Madagascar country office of WWF, which describes itself as the world's leading conservation organization. The office states that it works together with other actors to build a sustainable future for the Malagasy people and the nature of Madagascar, and that its objective in Madagascar is to manage natural capital well for the benefit of its people and nature. WWF pursues this by implementing concrete and sustainable solutions to urgent and emerging environmental problems worldwide in partnership with local communities, businesses, governments, international bodies and NGOs. WWF's interest in Madagascar dates back to 1963, when French zoologist Jean-Jacques Petter, who had received the WWF gold medal for his conservation work in Madagascar, asked WWF to conserve nature in Madagascar in view of its degradation; this led to the first WWF project there.

History

According to WWF Madagascar's 'Our Story' page, French zoologist Jean-Jacques Petter, described as a leading figure in French primatology, had received the WWF gold medal for his conservation work in Madagascar and asked WWF to conserve nature in Madagascar in view of its degradation. This led to the first WWF project, the safeguarding of threatened species. The page also notes that Madagascar is home to 5% of the world's plant and animal species, with a staggering 80% of them found nowhere else, and that more than 19,000 different plant species and more than 100 species of lemurs have been recorded there.
