Overview

Wutzky (also known as Wutzky Einkaufszentrum or Wutzky-Center) is a shopping centre located at the intersection of Wutzkyallee and Joachim-Gottschalk-Weg in the Gropiusstadt neighbourhood of Berlin's Neukölln district. It first opened on 9 April 1968 under the name "Ladenzentrum Süd" and was at that time the largest shopping centre in a residential area in Berlin. The centre is directly connected to the U-Bahn station Wutzkyallee on line U7. In the early 1990s the centre underwent a refurbishment: a glass roof was added and it was renamed "Wutzky-Center", transforming it from an open-air shopping zone into a covered, more modern shopping centre. Around 2011/2012 a comprehensive renovation and expansion was carried out to a design by Giese + Giese Architekten. The centre reopened on 20 June 2012 with a floor area of more than 9,100 m² (previously about 6,000 m²). The number of shops and practices increased from around 34 to 44. The renovation gave the centre direct access from the U-Bahn station Wutzkyallee, better medical and service facilities, and more modern architecture. The owner and developer is the housing company degewo, which invested approximately €16 million in the modernisation. Today Wutzky presents itself as a family-friendly and friendly shopping centre in the southern Gropiusstadt area. According to its official website, 30 providers ensure the supply of the surrounding residential areas with goods and services for daily needs. Ten health practices and service providers make Wutzky a local health centre as well. Several cafés and restaurants are also part of the offering, and visitors can enjoy coffee after shopping in a pleasantly quiet atmosphere on the adjacent Rotraut-Richter-Platz. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the weekly market Wutzkyallee takes place there. The centre is barrier-free and has its own U-Bahn access (U-Bahn station Wutzkyallee). Cars can be parked free of charge for two hours in the car park. The centre communicates current promotions, events and offers via its Facebook fan page.
