Overview
World Gym is an international fitness-center brand founded in 1976 by Joe Gold in Southern California. The brand emerged from the bodybuilding culture associated with Venice Beach and the wider Los Angeles fitness scene. Gold had previously founded Gold's Gym in 1965, but sold that business in 1973 and no longer controlled the rights to use his surname in a new gym brand. He therefore established World Gym as a separate venture, first operating in the Santa Monica area and later moving the venue to Venice and Marina del Rey. The original World Gym was closely associated with the era's competitive bodybuilding and celebrity fitness culture. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Dave Draper and Franco Columbu were among the prominent bodybuilders linked to Joe Gold's facilities. The gym's historical importance was reinforced by the 1977 documentary film Pumping Iron, which documented Schwarzenegger's training in Gold's gym environment. This association helped position World Gym as a heritage bodybuilding brand rather than merely a local health club. After Joe Gold's death in 2004, the original Marina del Rey location eventually closed. The brand nevertheless continued as a franchising business. The Cammilleri family owned World Gym from 2009, during a period in which the company developed its international franchise network and pursued regional flagship facilities. By March 2021, World Gym stated that it had more than 200 franchised locations across six continents. Its network has included clubs in more than 20 countries and territories. World Gym's business scope extends beyond access to gym facilities. Depending on the market and club, the brand supports resistance and cardiovascular training, group exercise, personal training, nutrition and fitness seminars, and specialist activities such as boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. It also sells or licenses branded apparel, workout accessories, sports bags, water bottles and nutrition-related products. Franchise opportunities form an important part of its operating model, allowing local operators to run clubs under the World Gym name. The company has continued to add locations, including a new club in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 2019. In October 2024, World Gym Taiwan announced that it had acquired World Gym International for US$9 million. The transaction represents a significant change in ownership and links the international brand directly with one of its major operating markets. World Gym therefore combines a historically recognizable bodybuilding identity with a contemporary franchised fitness network and a broad range of club-based wellness services.
History
World Gym's history is rooted in the Southern California bodybuilding community of the 1960s and 1970s. Joe Gold founded Gold's Gym in 1965, and the facility became associated with elite bodybuilders and the developing commercial culture of strength training. Gold sold that business in 1973. After returning from work as a sea merchant, he regretted no longer controlling the rights to his surname for a gym venture. Because he could not use the Gold name for a new facility, he founded World Gym in 1976. Gold initially established the new gym in Santa Monica. The business was subsequently moved to Venice and later to Marina del Rey. Its location and founder connected it to the celebrated Muscle Beach and Los Angeles bodybuilding scene. Arnold Schwarzenegger trained in Joe Gold's gym after arriving in the United States, and other notable bodybuilding figures associated with the facilities included Lou Ferrigno, Dave Draper and Franco Columbu. The gym's place in bodybuilding history was further publicized by Pumping Iron, the 1977 documentary that recorded Schwarzenegger's training in Gold's gym environment. The original World Gym changed hands during Gold's lifetime. Gold sold the World Gym location in the San Fernando Valley to bodybuilder Steve Davis, who later sold it for $25,000. Gold's Santa Monica operation was eventually relocated to Venice and Marina del Rey. After Gold died in 2004, the Marina del Rey location ultimately closed, but the wider World Gym name survived as an international business rather than as a single founder-operated club. The modern company developed primarily through franchising. The Cammilleri family owned World Gym from 2009 and pursued expansion of the franchise network, including the development of regional flagship gyms. This model allowed independently operated clubs in different markets to use the World Gym identity while offering local fitness services. The brand's international portfolio grew to more than 200 franchised locations across six continents by March 2021, with operations reported in more than 20 countries and territories. World Gym clubs and the associated international business cover conventional gym services as well as specialized training. Offerings can include exercise equipment, group classes, personal training, nutrition and fitness education, boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts. The business also supports branded merchandise and fitness-related products, including clothing, bags, water bottles, accessories and nutrition products. The opening of a Sherbrooke club in 2019 illustrated continued geographic expansion in North America. In October 2024, World Gym Taiwan announced that it had acquired World Gym International for US$9 million. This transaction marked a new phase in the brand's corporate history, placing the international organization under the ownership of a major World Gym market. The brand's evolution consequently spans three interconnected identities: Joe Gold's historic bodybuilding gym, a global franchise platform, and a contemporary fitness-services organization operating through clubs, training programs, merchandise and franchise relationships.
