Overview

Wonju Munhwa Broadcasting Co., Ltd. (Korean: 원주문화방송(주); commonly Wonju MBC) is a regional broadcasting station of the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) network, based in Wonju, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea. It operates television and radio services for Wonju and the wider Gangwon area, producing local news, current-affairs programming, documentaries, entertainment shows and cultural events, while carrying the national MBC schedule. The station's on-air identity is built around local news and regional content. Its website presents a news portal with the latest Wonju-area headlines, a TV section with programme schedules and special programmes, and radio services on Standard FM and Music FM. It also runs a viewer-participation area with notices, viewer opinions, a viewer committee, a grievance-handling officer and a clean-center reporting channel, reflecting the public-service obligations of a terrestrial broadcaster. Beyond broadcasting, Wonju MBC organises cultural activities and performances, offers hall rental at its art hall, runs station tours, and operates advertising sales for TV and radio. Its history page records a long technical evolution: analogue transmission, the launch of Standard FM services on Baegunsan and Taegisan, the introduction of a TV relay vehicle, the transition to digital terrestrial television, DMB transmission, and later UHDTV broadcasting from Taegisan. The station marked its 49th anniversary with a special documentary, indicating a founding in the early 1970s. As an MBC regional station, Wonju MBC combines network programming with locally produced output, positioning itself as a regional media voice that aims, in its own words, to show the direction future media should take within a uniform broadcasting market.

History

Wonju Munhwa Broadcasting is the MBC network's regional station for Wonju and the surrounding Gangwon area. Its published company history records a steady build-out of transmission and production infrastructure from the 1990s onward, alongside the broader Korean transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. In the 1990s the station expanded its radio and outside-broadcast capacity. It introduced a TV relay vehicle in August 1994, and in November 1997 opened a Standard FM service on Baegunsan (92.7 MHz), followed by the construction of a new transmitter building and relocation of equipment at Baegunsan. In October 2000 a Standard FM service opened on Taegisan (102.5 MHz, 1 kW), and in July 2001 a Standard FM service opened at Yeongwol's Gukjisan (92.7 MHz, 90 W). The 2000s brought further transmitter work and the start of digital television. New towers and antenna relocations were carried out at Baegunsan and Taegisan in 2002–2003, and in August 2004 the station obtained a digital TV broadcasting licence recommendation for Baegunsan and Taegisan. On 28 December 2005 Wonju MBC opened its digital terrestrial television stations, with transmitters at Baegunsan and Taegisan. In 2006 the radio automation system was replaced, and in 2007–2008 DMB transmission equipment was installed and a DMB service opened at Baegunsan. Digital TV news and production facilities were completed in 2008. The 2010s saw the completion of the digital transition and the beginning of ultra-high-definition broadcasting. A digital unmanned relay station opened at Munmak in December 2010; analogue AM and FM equipment was digitised and integrated in January 2012; and analogue terrestrial TV broadcasting ended on 25 October 2012. A content management system was built in 2013, along with a news and programme playout system, and the Taegisan transmitter site completed its confirmed-channel DTV conversion. On 21 December 2017 the station opened UHDTV broadcasting from Taegisan (channel 22, 2 kW). In 2018 the TV production system was rebuilt on a file-based workflow, and in 2021 the Pyeongchang Standard FM transmitter was replaced. AM broadcasting ended on 8 March 2023. The station has also marked its anniversaries with special programming; its website references a 49th-anniversary special documentary, "I Live" (나는 산다), broadcast in October 2019, which points to a founding in the early 1970s. Today Wonju MBC continues to operate television and radio services, a news portal, cultural events and advertising sales for the Wonju and Gangwon region.
