Overview
Wolfsburger Verkehrs GmbH (WVG) is the municipal public transport company responsible for bus services in Wolfsburg, Germany, and the surrounding region. It is a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Wolfsburg AG and a member of the Verkehrsverbund Region Braunschweig (VRB), the regional transport association. With more than 15 million passengers annually, WVG ranks among the largest transport operators in the Braunschweig region. Its network extends well beyond Wolfsburg's city limits, with services reaching Braunschweig and other municipalities in the districts of Gifhorn, Goslar, Helmstedt, Peine and Wolfenbüttel. The company operates a fleet of buses on urban, regional and school routes, as well as dedicated works services for the Volkswagen plant. WVG employs around 270 people (as of 2019). Its headquarters and depot are located at Borsigstraße in the Ost industrial area of Wolfsburg. The company provides a range of customer services including a service hotline, a mobile app for timetable information and mobile ticketing, barrier-free travel training, and a PlusBus premium service. WVG's history dates back to 1939, when the Stadtwerke of the newly founded city of Wolfsburg (then Stadt des KdF-Wagens) established bus operations; the transport division was spun off into the separate WVG entity in 1975.
History
The history of Wolfsburger Verkehrs GmbH is closely tied to the development of the city of Wolfsburg. In 1938, the city was founded as Stadt des KdF-Wagens (City of the KdF Car) to house workers for the Volkswagen factory; it was renamed Wolfsburg in 1945. In 1939, the municipal utility company Stadtwerke was established, and in 1940 it began operating bus services. The first bus line ran from the railway station, taking a circuitous route to Steimker Berg. A bus line to Fallersleben was also established early on. In 1944, bus operations had to be suspended due to the war. After the war, services were gradually resumed. For decades, the bus operations were run directly by Stadtwerke Wolfsburg. In 1975, the bus division was spun off into a separate subsidiary, Wolfsburger Verkehrs GmbH (WVG). The company's depot was long located at An der Vorburg; in 2006, it moved to its current site at Borsigstraße in the Ost industrial area to make way for the construction of the Designer Outlets Wolfsburg. Over the decades, WVG expanded its network and became a member of the Verkehrsverbund Region Braunschweig (VRB), allowing passengers to use a single ticket across participating operators in the region. By 2019, the company employed around 270 people and carried more than 15 million passengers annually. Today, WVG continues to operate a comprehensive network of city, regional, school and works bus lines, and offers modern services such as a mobile app and barrier-free travel training.
