Overview
WNEU is a full-power television station serving the Boston-area and broader New England Hispanic audience as an owned-and-operated outlet of the Spanish-language Telemundo network. The station is licensed to Merrimack, New Hampshire, while its principal production and administrative operations are based at the NBCUniversal Boston Media Center in Needham, Massachusetts. Its transmitter is also located in Needham, helping the station reach the Boston market through over-the-air digital television and multichannel distribution. The station began broadcasting on August 14, 1987, as WGOT, an independent outlet operated by Golden Triangle TV 60 Corporation. Its original identity referred to the so-called Golden Triangle of Manchester, Nashua, and Salem, New Hampshire. During the early 1990s, the station attempted to secure a Fox affiliation and became involved in litigation alleging that Fox, Boston affiliate WFXT, and the Boston Celtics had worked to disadvantage its bid. The case was part of a longer struggle by small-market and peripheral Boston stations to obtain network programming and cable carriage. Paxson Communications acquired WGOT in 1995. The station then moved through several low-cost programming models, including Infomall TV Network programming, religious material, infomercials, Pax TV programming, and shopping programming. It adopted the call sign WPXB in 1998 and became a charter Pax TV owned-and-operated station, although that affiliation was short-lived because another Boston-area outlet became the network's principal station. WPXB later carried ValueVision, subsequently known as ShopNBC. NBC acquired the station from Paxson in 2002 for use as a Telemundo owned-and-operated station. The call letters changed to WNEU shortly afterward, and Telemundo programming began in April 2003. For a period, WNEU operated under a joint sales and time brokerage arrangement with ZGS Communications, owner of the low-power Telemundo outlet WTMU-LP. That arrangement made WNEU functionally part of a broader Telemundo service covering the Boston region. NBCUniversal resumed full control in 2014. WNEU's role expanded in the middle of the 2010s. In 2015, NBCUniversal launched locally produced early-evening and late-night Spanish-language newscasts, sharing resources with New England Cable News. The operation was later branded Noticiero Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra to reflect coverage beyond Boston and New Hampshire. The newscasts were also distributed through NBCUniversal's New England television assets, including outlets in Connecticut and Rhode Island. WNEU also became part of NBCUniversal's restructuring of Boston network television. In 2017, NBC Boston launched on WBTS-LD, WNEU's second digital subchannel, and WMFP-DT5 after NBCUniversal ended its affiliation with WHDH. WNEU therefore retained Telemundo on its principal service while contributing infrastructure to the new NBC service. The station, NBC Boston, NECN, and other regional NBCUniversal operations were consolidated at the Boston Media Center, which opened at the beginning of 2020. WNEU remains an active Telemundo station, combining network entertainment, news, sports, and local Spanish-language journalism for New England viewers.
History
WNEU signed on August 14, 1987, as WGOT, an independent station licensed to Merrimack, New Hampshire. It was established by Golden Triangle TV 60 Corporation, with its call sign reflecting the Manchester–Nashua–Salem area. In its early years, WGOT sought a Fox affiliation and later filed an antitrust action against Fox, WFXT, and the Boston Celtics, alleging that those parties obstructed its attempt to obtain network programming and cable carriage. The station's newscast aimed at New Hampshire viewers was discontinued in 1994 after weak financial performance and limited audience interest. Paxus Communications acquired WGOT in 1995 for $3.05 million. Under Paxson, the station carried Infomall TV Network programming, religious programming, infomercials, and later Pax TV. The call sign became WPXB in 1998. A Boston-area translator was used to improve the reach of the service, although the translator was not included in NBC's later purchase. WPXB left Pax TV programming in 1999 after another outlet became the network's primary Boston station, and it subsequently carried shopping programming under the ValueVision and ShopNBC brands. NBC agreed to purchase WPXB in September 2002 and completed the acquisition on October 29 of that year. The station changed its call letters to WNEU two days later. NBC intended to use channel 60 as a Telemundo owned-and-operated station, but ShopNBC programming continued temporarily while ValueVision reorganized its station holdings. Telemundo programming began in April 2003. WNEU initially worked with ZGS Communications through a joint sales and time brokerage agreement involving WTMU-LP, an existing low-power Telemundo outlet. NBCUniversal ended that arrangement in April 2014 and resumed direct operational control. In 2015, NBCUniversal created a local WNEU news operation with early-evening and live late-night newscasts. The operation shared production resources with NECN and was later broadened under the Noticiero Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra name. NBCUniversal also arranged for the newscasts to be carried by associated stations in Connecticut and Rhode Island, extending the regional reporting footprint. The station became strategically important during NBCUniversal's 2016–2017 Boston affiliation transition. NBC chose not to renew WHDH's NBC affiliation and launched NBC Boston on January 1, 2017. WNEU's second digital channel, together with WBTS-LD and WMFP-DT5, carried the new NBC service. The decision prompted a lawsuit from WHDH's owner, but the case was dismissed. WNEU continued to carry Telemundo on its principal channel. For many years the station maintained a nominal main-studio presence in Manchester's Sundial Center. After the repeal of the Federal Communications Commission main-studio rule and the opening of the NBCUniversal Boston Media Center in Needham around 2020, WNEU's operations were consolidated with NBC Boston and NECN. WNEU continues to operate as the Boston-area Telemundo outlet, with local programming and regional coverage aimed at Spanish-speaking audiences throughout New England.
