Overview
Witherspoon Media Group is an American media company based in Princeton, New Jersey. It is the publisher of two local publications: Town Topics Newspaper, a weekly community newspaper founded in 1946, and Princeton Magazine, a seasonal lifestyle and regional-interest magazine that the company acquired in 2008. The group describes its combined print circulation as 50,000, reaching readers across Central and Northern New Jersey, and it also produces daily online content. Town Topics Newspaper has been a Princeton institution since its first issue was delivered on March 15, 1946. The paper covers local politics, education, arts, culture, sports, and breaking news, and is delivered to homes and businesses throughout Princeton. Princeton Magazine, published four times a year, focuses on the traditions, celebrities, academics, artists, and designers of the Princeton region, with a staff of award-winning writers. Witherspoon Media Group positions itself at the intersection of history and luxury, serving an upscale readership and advertisers seeking to reach that audience through both print and digital channels. The company's editorial offices have been associated with the historic 19th-century brick building at 4 Mercer Street in Princeton, known locally as the "old Town Topics building."
History
Witherspoon Media Group traces its roots to the founding of Town Topics Newspaper in 1946. On Friday, March 15, 1946, the Princeton Post Office delivered approximately 3,400 copies of the first issue of Town Topics to homes and businesses in town. The paper was printed on both sides of a piece of paper 10 inches by 3.2 inches, folded together like an oversized train timetable. At the time, there was no Town Topics office; editorial and advertising materials were carried around in two briefcases and delivered once a week for printing. Over the decades, Town Topics became a Princeton institution, serving as the town's premier community newspaper and reporting on local politics, arts, sports, education, news, and breaking events. In 2008, Town Topics purchased Princeton Magazine. Princeton Magazine, which publishes four seasonal editions per year, focuses on the traditions, celebrities, academics, artists, and designers who call Princeton home. Under the ownership of what became Witherspoon Media Group, the two publications were brought together under a single media company. The group reports a combined print circulation of 50,000, with readership among upscale consumers throughout Central and Northern New Jersey. The company has also expanded into digital media, providing a daily stream of online content and embracing new ideas to help advertisers reach their audiences. The company's offices have been associated with the historic 19th-century brick edifice at 4 Mercer Street in Princeton, originally located at 1 Nassau Street in 1878, where it housed Priest's Drugstore. Still known to many as the "old Town Topics building," it was restored by its owner. Witherspoon Media Group continues to operate as a private media company, publishing Town Topics Newspaper and Princeton Magazine and maintaining a digital presence.
