History
Wissenschaft im Dialog was founded in 2000 with the aim of strengthening the public's understanding of science and understanding for science. The step followed the symposium "Public Understanding of Science and Humanities" in May 1999, at which leading representatives of German scientific organizations signed a memorandum agreeing to strengthen communication with the public. One year later, on 12 May 2000, eight shareholders founded Wissenschaft im Dialog gGmbH (WiD), which would take on this task. WiD thus took on the concept known in the Anglo-Saxon world as "Public Understanding of Sciences and Humanities (PUSH)": strengthening the public's understanding of science. WiD initially aimed to promote researchers' willingness to explain their research work and to awaken interest in science among the population. Over time, dialogue on controversial and socially relevant topics gained importance. The intention was now to actively involve citizens in discussion rather than seeing them merely as recipients of information. In light of growing emphasis on quality and impact questions in science communication, WiD expanded... Today its focus areas are dialogue and participation events, the development of new formats, broad communication, and networking.
