Overview

Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Norden GmbH is a municipal services company wholly owned by the town of Norden in East Frisia, Lower Saxony, Germany. It operates three main business divisions: utility services (electricity, natural gas, district heating and drinking water) through Stadtwerke Norden; tourism services for the Norden-Norddeich coastal resort area; and two public baths — the Ocean Wave adventure pool in Norddeich and the Frisia Bad in Norden. The company traces its roots to the early 20th century, when the town began electrification in 1914 and later established gas and water services. The modern holding structure was created in 1973, and the current legal entity emerged from a 2004 merger of predecessor companies. With more than 100 years of tradition, the company is closely tied to the region and contributes to its sustainable development. Its operations are managed by a commercial director and a technical director.

History

The history of Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Norden GmbH is closely linked to the development of municipal infrastructure in Norden, East Frisia. The town began electrification on 10 March 1914, signing a contract with Überlandzentrale Wiesmoor for electricity supply. On 5 June 1914, the town commissioned AEG Berlin to build a distribution network. By 1 October 1915, the town had taken over transfer stations and substations connected to the Avacon grid. On 1 October 1943, supply contracts were transferred to EWE (formerly Energieversorgung Weser-Ems). The electricity network was continuously expanded; in 1983 the Stadtwerke took over the concession and grid in Ostermarsch for 2.1 million DM. On 2 December 1987, the first wind farm known as Nörder Windloopers opened at Fledderweg with five turbines of 55 kW each, costing around 1.1 million DM; it was dismantled in early 2019 after 31 years. Gas supply in Norden began in 1967 with its own gasworks. Water supply started with the first spade cut for a waterworks in Hage on 30 June 1938, at planned cost of 600,000 RM. It was commissioned on 2 August 1939. The waterworks was expanded in 1969 and rebuilt on the same site in 1975, which facilitated the takeover of water supply in Hage. The new waterworks was ceremonially opened on 29 April 1976, and the first concession contract between the Stadtwerke and the Samtgemeinde Hage was signed on 10 May 1976. Tourism activities date back to 1813, when R. W. Seeberg offered cold and warm drinks at Norddeich. In 1905, a group of citizens founded the Kurverein Norden-Norddeich e.V. In 1962, it was converted into a Zweckverband (special-purpose association) as the two municipalities took over the association's tasks. In 1967, the first beach hall on the dike was built by the Zweckverband and leased to Paula Noormann. In 1972, the Zweckverband became Kurbetriebs GmbH, with Hermann Poppen as first managing director and spa director. The company was initially located in the old Lintelermarsch town hall. After Norddeich was designated a coastal spa resort in 1974, construction of the Haus des Gastes began in 1975 and was completed in 1976, initially operated in-house. In 1986, the new spa administration centre opened at Dörper Weg. In 1991, the tourist information office was established in the new Dritte Schwester building at the market. In 1996, the Haus des Gastes was redesigned after renovation and leased out. In 2005, the Norden tourist information office moved to the redesigned market pavilion. In 1973, an artificial seawater pool was created in Norddeich for the first time. On 17 December 1979, the seawater indoor pool in Norddeich was ceremonially opened, giving Norden both an outdoor and indoor pool. On 4 March 1988, the Wirtschaftsbetriebe took over the Städtische Frisia-Bad and have operated it since. The Stadtwerke were originally managed by the town administration, based in the town hall. In 1966, the town acquired the former Städtisches Krankenhaus as the seat for the Eigenbetrieb. On 19 December 1972, Kurbetriebs GmbH was founded as successor to the previous Zweckverband. On 15 May 1973, the existing Eigenbetrieb Versorgung was converted into Stadtwerke Norden GmbH. Simultaneously, Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Norden GmbH was founded as a holding company to hold the shares of both GmbHs. The company grew in 1976 through the extension of the water concession area in Hage and in 1983 through an extension of the electricity concession area. In 1984, the administration building on Feldstraße was rebuilt and expanded. In 2004, a reorganisation merged Kurbetriebs GmbH and Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Norden GmbH into Stadtwerke Norden GmbH, which was then renamed Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt Norden GmbH. Stadtwerke Norden continues to operate as a service brand with its own website.
