Overview

Wimbledon Brewery presents itself as Wimbledon's local brewery, stating that it has breathed new life into a brewery ravaged by fire in 1889 and created a collection of beers. Its website recounts that the original Wimbledon Brewery was started by William Cook in 1832 on Wimbledon High Street, and that today's brewery is based on the site of Merton Priory. The brewery sells canned and cask beers, mixed cases, and a small-batch gin.

History

Wimbledon Brewery's website states that the original Wimbledon Brewery was started by William Cook in 1832, standing in Wimbledon High Street where the old fire station is today, with the Brewery Tap beer house next door also run by William Cook. At that time there were 115 breweries in the London excise district. Following a number of changes of ownership, the brewery was taken over by William Quartermaine in 1880, who built the five-storey tower brewery, the highest building in Wimbledon at the time. A fire started at the brewery on January 2nd 1889; although the interior was badly damaged and all brewing equipment and machinery destroyed, the main structure of the building was left intact. The current brewery states that it is based on the site of Merton Priory, which was brewing throughout the Middle Ages, and that it has breathed new life into a brewery ravaged by fire in 1889. Its logo incorporates the image of the tower, the phoenix and barley and hops, representing its heritage and focus on using only the best ingredients.
