Overview
Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA) is a Zimbabwean conservation non-profit founded in 2019. It works to promote human-wildlife coexistence in Zimbabwe's critical wildlife areas, integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific expertise and partnering closely with local communities. The organisation addresses human-wildlife conflict (HWC) through non-lethal, culturally sensitive interventions such as predator-proof mobile bomas, chilli farming, beekeeping, and holistic land and livestock management. These measures aim to reduce conflict, improve community livelihoods, and contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. WCA also conducts research on wildlife behaviour and trends, raises environmental awareness, and advises farmers on fortifying livestock enclosures. Its mission is to strengthen the capacity of local communities to mitigate HWC in a changing climate for improved livelihoods and wildlife conservation. The vision is local-led, community-driven coexistence for thriving wildlife populations. WCA is led by a team of African conservationists and governed by a board chaired by Prof. Olga Laiza Kupika. The organisation published a Strategic Plan 2024–2028 outlining its roadmap for protecting wildlife, empowering communities, and promoting climate-smart practices.
History
Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA) was founded in 2019 in Zimbabwe. It emerged as a community-focused conservation initiative aimed at addressing human-wildlife conflict (HWC) in the country's critical wildlife areas. From its inception, WCA adopted a non-lethal, culturally sensitive approach that integrates indigenous knowledge with scientific expertise. The organisation partners closely with communities to craft effective solutions for HWC, benefiting both livelihoods and wildlife, especially key species such as lions and elephants. WCA's work addresses threats faced by wildlife due to habitat loss, climate change, and conflict with humans. Its interventions include the use of predator-proof mobile bomas, chilli farming, beekeeping, and holistic land and livestock management. These measures not only reduce HWC and improve community livelihoods but also contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation by promoting sustainable agriculture practices, carbon sequestration, and enhancing ecosystem services. WCA also conducts research to understand wildlife behaviour and trends, which guides its interventions, and raises awareness among communities, advising farmers on fortifying livestock enclosures. The organisation is led by a team of African conservationists and governed by a board of directors. In 2024, WCA published its Strategic Plan 2024–2028, outlining its roadmap for protecting wildlife, empowering communities, and promoting climate-smart practices over the next five years.
