History

Wilbur-Ellis was founded in 1921 when former University of Washington schoolmates Brayton Wilbur, Floyd Ellis and Thomas Franck opened a small import-export brokerage trading company in San Francisco with a $5,000 investment, focusing on trading fishmeal and fish oil. In the 1930s it initiated a presence in the Far East with the acquisition of Connell Brothers, a distributor of food and other products. In the 1940s it opened crop protection and treatment locations for the first time, starting in California and Arizona. In the 1950s, in post-war Japan, it was among the first foreign-based companies to reestablish trade with the country, and its expansion into agricultural inputs continued with the installation of the first dusting sulfur mill in Fresno, California. In the 1960s it purchased businesses in California, the Pacific Northwest and Texas as fertilizer and crop protection formulas became more sophisticated. In the 1970s it established a dedicated Safety, Regulatory and Environmental department in response to changes in government oversight. In the 1980s Connell Brothers focused on specialty chemicals and ingredients and increased its presence in Southeast Asia, Nutrition became a separate business, and Wilbur-Ellis ranked among the 50 largest privately owned companies in the United States. In the 1990s key acquisitions including John Taylor Fertilizers established its position among the top crop protection service providers, and its Canadian feed trading business expanded with operations in Lethbridge, Alberta.
