Overview

Wiener Neustädter Stadtwerke und Kommunal Service GmbH (WNSKS) is the municipal utility company of Wiener Neustadt, a city in Lower Austria. It was founded in 2003 and is owned by the City of Wiener Neustadt. The company is best known for running the city's public bus network and for providing waste collection and wastewater services across the entire Wiener Neustadt district. Beyond transport and sanitation, WNSKS also offers a range of communal services including funeral and cemetery services, forestry management, management of agricultural land (a Gutshof), energy service installation, bus excursions and water supply. The transport division operates the Wiener Neustadt city bus network. In 2020 the route network was redesigned to relieve pressure on the Hauptplatz and to connect surrounding municipalities to the city bus system; around €800,000 was invested through the Lower Austria regional public transport financing programme. The bus fleet has been modernised substantially: in 2005 the company still relied entirely on second-hand individual vehicles ranging from MAN articulated buses to small Neoplan Metroliner minibuses, while since 2012 it has operated exclusively low-floor CNG-powered MAN buses, including articulated buses and two- and three-axle solo buses. WNSKS is responsible for the entire waste collection of the Wiener Neustadt district and for the sewerage system. Its additional services include cemetery and funeral services, forest maintenance, management of agricultural estates, energy service installation, organised bus travel and water supply. As a municipal enterprise, the company is not listed on a stock exchange and functions as an arm of local government service provision for the city and its surrounding region.

History

Wiener Neustädter Stadtwerke und Kommunal Service GmbH (WNSKS) was founded in 2003 as the municipal utility company of Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. It was established to bundle the city's communal services, most notably public transport and waste disposal, under a single municipal enterprise. The transport division has evolved considerably. In 2005 the bus fleet consisted entirely of second-hand individual vehicles acquired from various sources, ranging from MAN articulated buses to small Neoplan Metroliner minibuses. Over the following years the company invested heavily in modernising the fleet. Since 2012, WNSKS has operated exclusively low-floor buses with CNG (compressed natural gas) propulsion from MAN, including articulated buses as well as two- and three-axle solo buses. In 2020 the city bus route network was comprehensively redesigned. The new concept aimed, among other things, to relieve the Hauptplatz (main square) of bus traffic and to connect surrounding municipalities to the city bus system. Approximately €800,000 was invested in the project through the Lower Austria regional public transport financing programme (Nahverkehrsfinanzierungs-Programm des Landes Niederösterreich). Beyond transport, WNSKS operates the entire waste collection service for the Wiener Neustadt district and is responsible for the sewerage system. Additional services offered by the company include cemetery and funeral services, forestry maintenance, management of agricultural land (a Gutshof), energy service installation, organised bus travel and water supply. As a municipal enterprise owned by the City of Wiener Neustadt, the company is not listed on any stock exchange.
