Overview

Wiehengebirgsmolkerei Unterlübbe Kurt Hübel GmbH & Co. KG, commonly known as Wiemo, was a private dairy company based in Unterlübbe, a village in the municipality of Hille in the Minden-Lübbecke district of eastern Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1929, it was run as a private dairy for three generations and took its name from the nearby Wiehengebirge hills. The dairy collected raw milk from around 300 farmers across the Weser lowlands, the slopes of the Wiehengebirge, adjacent Lower Saxony, and the Münsterland region, processing roughly 45 million kilograms of raw milk annually. Its product range included cream, whole milk, quark, and various specialties, distributed through its own fleet of vehicles primarily within the local Minden-Lübbecke district and neighbouring regions. The company faced financial difficulties as early as 2022, when farmers waited months for milk payments. In November 2024, Wiehengebirgsmolkerei filed for insolvency at the Bielefeld District Court. Operations continued initially with 18 employees under the provisional insolvency administrator, but the business ceased in January 2025 when insolvency proceedings opened. Liquidation was dated 11 February 2025, and the vehicle fleet was auctioned in summer 2025. In spring 2026, it was reported that Yömilch DBG Deutsches Biogeschäft GmbH from Berlin planned to take over the insolvent Wiemo dairy and invest millions in the Unterlübbe site, with a restart planned for 2027. The company logo featured a round badge with the inscription 'Wiemo'; until the 1980s, packaging also displayed a stylised depiction of the Wiehengebirge.

History

Wiehengebirgsmolkerei was founded in 1929 as a private dairy in Unterlübbe, a village in the municipality of Hille in the Minden-Lübbecke district of eastern Westphalia, Germany. It was run as a private dairy for three generations and named after the nearby Wiehengebirge hills. The milk catchment area covered the Weser lowlands and the slopes of the Wiehengebirge in the Minden-Lübbecke district, as well as areas from adjacent Lower Saxony and the Münsterland region. Each year, around 300 farmers delivered approximately 45 million kilograms of raw milk to the dairy. From this raw material, milk products such as cream, whole milk, quark, and some specialties were produced. Distribution was handled by the company's own fleet of vehicles, and the sales area was local, primarily in the Minden-Lübbecke district and the adjacent Lower Saxony and East Westphalian regions. As early as 2022, the dairy was in financial difficulty, with farmers waiting for very large sums of milk money from several months. The company repeatedly announced its intention to settle its debts. Ultimately, in November 2024, the dairy filed for insolvency at the Bielefeld District Court. Business operations, with 18 employees at the time, were initially continued in full with the consent of the provisional insolvency administrator, according to the insolvency administrator. During this time, farmers partly switched to the Frischli dairy in Rehburg-Loccum. In the meantime, operations have been discontinued since January 2025 due to the opening of insolvency proceedings. 11 February 2025 is named as the date of liquidation. The vehicle fleet was auctioned in summer 2025. In spring 2026, it was surprisingly announced that the company Yömilch DBG Deutsches Biogeschäft GmbH from Berlin plans to take over the insolvent Wiemo dairy and invest millions in the Unterlübbe site. The restart is scheduled for 2027. Yömilch specialises in the production and distribution of high-quality organic milk products. The product range includes a variety of organic milk products, including fresh milk, yoghurt, cheese, and other dairy products. The company logo of the dairy, which appeared on all packaging, consists of a round badge with the inscription 'Wiemo'. Until the 1980s, the packaging of the dairy products depicted a stylised representation of the Wiehengebirge.
