Overview
WideOpenWest, Inc., commonly marketed under the WOW! brand, is an American communications provider whose principal activities are residential and business broadband internet, landline voice, and cable-related video services. It is a regional cable operator rather than a nationwide telecommunications carrier. Its network has historically passed approximately 1.9 million homes and businesses, while its subscriber base was reported at approximately 538,100 in November 2022. The company was established in Denver, Colorado, in 1996. During its early years, WOW! developed a relatively small local cable and broadband footprint; by 2001 it was serving roughly 200 customers in the Denver area. Expansion thereafter relied heavily on acquisitions of existing cable systems and communications businesses. A significant early transaction was the 2001 purchase of Americast, an overbuild system created and operated by Ameritech New Media. That transaction gave WOW! access to Midwestern markets around Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Denver, and Evansville, although the company has since exited several of those areas. WOW! continued to enlarge its regional footprint through the acquisition of Broadstripe cable systems in Michigan in 2012 and Knology, a broadband operator with markets in 13 states, during the same period. Knology had itself expanded through earlier combinations with Valley Telephone Company, PrairieWave Communications, Graceba Total Communications, and Sunflower Broadband. These transactions helped push WOW!'s combined customer count above 800,000 in 2012 and broadened its product mix across residential and commercial communications. The company's later history has involved both selective expansion and substantial portfolio rationalization. WOW! sold systems in South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota to Clarity Telecom in 2014; those operations subsequently became associated with Vast Broadband. It acquired NuLink in Newnan, Georgia, in 2016, while also agreeing to sell its Lawrence, Kansas systems to Midco. In 2017, WOW! completed an initial public offering, with Avista Capital Partners and Crestview Partners remaining important shareholders. The company later deployed DOCSIS 3.1 across approximately 95 percent of its footprint, positioning its hybrid-fiber-coaxial network for higher broadband speeds. During 2021, WOW! announced large divestitures. Its Cleveland and Columbus systems were sold to Atlantic Broadband, now known as Breezeline, while systems in Chicago, Evansville, and Anne Arundel County, Maryland, were sold to Astound Broadband. These transactions materially reshaped the company into a more concentrated regional operator. Avista Capital Partners exited its investment in 2019, leaving Crestview as the largest shareholder at that time. WOW! has also been changing its approach to television. In 2023 it announced plans to discontinue its internally operated television products, including WOW! TV+, and move video customers toward YouTube TV. The stated strategic rationale was to reduce the bandwidth and operating burden associated with traditional cable video while allocating more network capacity to internet service. The transition was expected to continue through April 2026, when traditional cable television service was planned to be discontinued. On December 31, 2025, DigitalBridge and Crestview announced completion of a take-private acquisition valued at $1.5 billion. Following that transaction, WOW! ceased to be a publicly traded company. Its current identity is therefore that of a privately held, regionally focused broadband operator emphasizing internet connectivity and related communications services, with legacy cable television being phased out.
History
WideOpenWest was founded in Denver, Colorado, in 1996 as a cable and communications operator. Its initial development was modest: after several years of network construction and market development, the company was serving approximately 200 Denver-area customers by 2001. Rather than building a nationwide network, WOW! pursued a regional cable-operator model in which acquisitions of existing systems provided access to established customers and infrastructure. In November 2001, WOW! acquired Americast, an overbuild system developed and operated by Ameritech New Media. The transaction expanded the company's presence into metropolitan areas surrounding Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Denver, and Evansville. Although some of these systems were later sold or exited, the Americast transaction established the Midwestern operating base that became central to WOW!'s identity. WOW! next expanded through a transaction involving Broadstripe. In August 2011, WOW! and Wave Broadband announced an agreement to purchase substantially all of Broadstripe's assets. WOW! completed the acquisition of Broadstripe's Michigan cable systems in January 2012. In the same broad period, WOW! acquired Knology, a broadband company operating in 13 markets. Knology had previously combined with Valley Telephone Company in 1999, PrairieWave Communications in 2007, Graceba Total Communications in 2008, and Sunflower Broadband in 2011. After the Knology acquisition, WOW!'s combined customer count exceeded 800,000 by April 2012. The company subsequently began reshaping its footprint. In 2014, it sold cable, internet, and telephone systems in South Dakota, together with related markets in Iowa and Minnesota previously associated with Knology and PrairieWave, to Clarity Telecom in a transaction reported at $262 million. Those operations later adopted the Vast Broadband identity. In 2016, WOW! acquired NuLink, a Newnan, Georgia cable operator with approximately 34,000 customers at closing. The company also agreed to sell its Lawrence, Kansas systems to Midco; WOW! ceased serving Lawrence in June 2018. WOW! entered the public markets through an initial public offering in 2017. Avista Capital Partners and Crestview Partners retained substantial interests after the offering. The operator invested in network modernization and announced in March 2018 that DOCSIS 3.1 had been deployed across approximately 95 percent of its footprint. This upgrade supported faster broadband tiers and increased the capacity of its hybrid-fiber-coaxial network. In August 2019, Avista sold its shares, leaving Crestview as WOW!'s largest shareholder with a reported 37 percent stake. A major strategic retrenchment occurred in 2021. WOW! agreed to sell its Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio systems to Atlantic Broadband, which was later renamed Breezeline; the transaction closed on September 1, 2021. In a separate transaction announced the same month, the company agreed to sell systems in Chicago, Evansville, and Anne Arundel, Maryland, to Astound Broadband. These divestitures reduced the company's geographic breadth and emphasized a smaller set of regional broadband markets. In 2023, WOW! announced a further shift away from traditional cable television. It planned to discontinue its internally operated video products, including WOW! TV+, and migrate customers to YouTube TV while maintaining existing cable television operations during the transition. The intended completion date was April 2026. The strategy was designed to simplify the video offering and release network capacity for broadband, which had become the company's primary growth and competitive focus. On December 31, 2025, DigitalBridge and Crestview announced that they had completed a take-private acquisition of WOW! valued at $1.5 billion. The transaction ended WOW!'s period as a publicly traded company. The brand remains an active United States communications operator, centered on broadband internet and related telephone and business services, while traditional cable television is being phased out.
