Overview
Wiadomości Statystyczne ("Statistical News") is a Polish scientific monthly journal devoted to statistics and related disciplines. It has been published since September 1956 by the Główny Urząd Statystyczny (Central Statistical Office of Poland, GUS) together with the Polskie Towarzystwo Statystyczne (Polish Statistical Association, PTS). The journal publishes scholarly articles in statistics and neighbouring fields, works on statistical practice, descriptions of the activities of public statistics bodies, and materials concerning the Polish Statistical Association itself. The title continues the tradition of the interwar journal Kwartalnik Statystyczny, published in the 1920s and 1930s. It should not be confused with an earlier GUS publication that also carried the name Wiadomości Statystyczne and appeared before the Second World War (October 1923–August 1939) and in the post-war years (August 1945–November 1951); that earlier publication had a different character, presenting numerical information on the state and development of the country's social and economic life. Since 2007 the journal has been parameterised (i.e., included in the official scoring system for Polish scientific journals). Under the communication of the Minister of Education and Science of 9 February 2021 on the list of scientific journals and peer-reviewed materials from international conferences, authors receive 70 points for a publication in Wiadomości Statystyczne. The journal is governed by an editorial board headed by editor-in-chief Prof. Marek Cierpiał-Wolan, with Dr. Andrzej Młodak as deputy editor-in-chief, and supported by a scientific council chaired by Prof. Tomasz Panek.
History
Wiadomości Statystyczne has been published since September 1956 as a scientific monthly issued by the Główny Urząd Statystyczny (Central Statistical Office of Poland) and the Polskie Towarzystwo Statystyczne (Polish Statistical Association). It continues the tradition of the Kwartalnik Statystyczny, a journal published in the 1920s and 1930s. The name itself has an earlier history. Before the Second World War, from October 1923 to August 1939, and again in the post-war years from August 1945 to November 1951, GUS published a periodical also titled Wiadomości Statystyczne. That earlier publication, however, had a different character: it presented numerical information about the state and development of the country's social and economic life, and it should not be identified with the scientific journal published today. From 2007 the journal has been parameterised, meaning it is recognised in the Polish system of scoring scientific journals. According to the communication of the Minister of Education and Science dated 9 February 2021 on the list of scientific journals and peer-reviewed materials from international conferences, authors receive 70 points for publishing in Wiadomości Statystyczne. The journal is run by an editorial board (Kolegium Redakcyjne) whose editor-in-chief is Prof. Marek Cierpiał-Wolan and whose deputy editor-in-chief is Dr. Andrzej Młodak. Its members include scholars from Poland and abroad, such as Prof. Tudorel Andrei, Renata Bielak, Dr. Grażyna Dehnel, Dr. Jacek Kowalewski, Dr. Jan Kubacki, Dr. Grażyna Marciniak, Dr. Mateusz Pipień, Marek Rojíček, Anna Shostya, Dr. Małgorzata Tarczyńska-Łuniewska, Dr. Wioletta Wrzaszcz and Dr. Agnieszka Zgierska. The editorial secretary is Małgorzata Zygmont. A Scientific Council (Rada Naukowa), chaired by Prof. Tomasz Panek, includes members such as Prof. Samuel Kobina Annim, Prof. Anthony Arundel, Dr. Atanas Atanasov, Prof. Eric Bartelsman, Dr. Maria Teresa Borges, Prof. Czesław Domański, Prof. Elżbieta Gołata, Prof. Semen Matkovskyi, Prof. Włodzimierz Okrasa, Prof. Józef Oleński, Prof. Juan Manuel Rodríguez Poo, Dr. Dominik Rozkrut, Prof. Iveta Stankovičová, Prof. Marek Walesiak and Dr. Georges-Simon Ulrich; its secretary is Paulina Kucharska-Singh.
