Whole Foods Co-op

Whole Foods Co-op is a consumer-owned cooperative grocery store based in Duluth, Minnesota. Founded in 1970 as a buying club, it has grown to over 14,500 owners, 140+ employees, and two retail locations, with over $23 million in annual sales. The Co-op is governed by a Board of Directors and supports 170 local vendors. It offers Co+op Deals, Fresh Deals, in-store coupons, and Co+op Basics featuring Field Day products.

Whole Foods Co-op began in 1970 when 20 members formed the Whole Foods Buying Club in the Chester Creek House in Duluth, Minnesota, to buy and share bulk grains and other organic foods not available in regular retail stores. The first Coordinator was hired in 1971. In 1972, the buying club moved to 901 East 7th Street and then to 24 West 5th Street. In 1973, it merged with the Community Food Buying Club. In the 1980s, it merged with the West End Co-op, and in 1981, Julie Ball won a contest to name the newsletter the Garbanzo Gazette. In 1983, the first paid cashier was hired through the City of Duluth job placement program. In 1986, the "wheat" logo was designed by member Marian Lansky. Over the past 55 years, the Co-op has grown to over 14,500 Owners, 140+ employees in 2 retail locations, and over $23 million in annual sales.
