Overview

Wetterblick is a German-language weather platform that provides forecasts, live radar, official DWD warnings, measurement values and climate information for Germany. It grew out of a Facebook page called Rhein-Ruhr-Wetter, started in 2014 by a founder who goes by the first name Marcel, after the severe Pentecost storm "Ela" motivated him to work more intensively on weather forecasting in order to warn people early. The project expanded into its own website between 2016 and 2017, initially covering North Rhine-Westphalia, then moved to its own DWD-based algorithms in 2020–2022 and launched an Android app in 2021 and an iOS app in 2022. In 2024 the service was rebranded and expanded into the nationwide portal Wetterblick, and since early 2025 it has supplied weather data for all of Germany. The platform combines several weather models, including the DWD's short-range ICON-RUC and high-resolution ICON-D2 models for Germany and the American global GFS model, and presents them alongside a live rain radar, current weather conditions, DWD warnings, saved locations and forecasts for major German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne. It also offers a live ticker of weather news and additional tools such as ChaseLab for storm chasers, downloadable weather graphics including meteograms and extreme-value tables, aurora (polar light) Kp-index forecasts and visibility probabilities, and a bioweather section. Wetterblick reports strong organic growth, stating that its reach comes from users actively searching for their weather rather than bought traffic. According to its own server-side analysis, the site reached more than 360,000 visitors, around 497,000 visits and roughly 996,000 page views in July, with month-over-month growth of about 93–94 percent in visitors and visits and about 15 percent in page views compared with June. The platform is privately operated and is not affiliated with a listed company; it is a digital product brand rather than a traditional corporate group.

History

Wetterblick's history begins in 2014 with a Facebook page called Rhein-Ruhr-Wetter. According to the platform's own account, the severe Pentecost storm "Ela" was the trigger that led founder Marcel to engage more intensively with weather forecasting in order to warn people early. Interest grew, and between 2016 and 2017 the first dedicated website went online; from 2017 onward the project provided precise forecasts for the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia under the name Wetter NRW. Between 2020 and 2022 the service shifted to its own algorithms based on data from the German national meteorological service (DWD). This period also saw the launch of mobile apps: an Android app followed in 2021 and an iOS version for Apple users in 2022. In 2024 the project took what it describes as the big step to the nationwide portal "Wetterblick", and since the beginning of 2025 it has supplied the whole of Germany with weather data. The platform now presents a broad set of features: a live rain radar with a full view, current weather conditions, DWD warnings, saved locations ("Meine Orte"), forecasts for major cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne, and detailed weather models including the DWD's short-range ICON-RUC and high-resolution ICON-D2 models for Germany and the American global GFS model. A live ticker carries current weather news, and additional tools include ChaseLab for storm chasers (combining radar, cells, hail and lightning in full screen), downloadable weather graphics such as meteograms, extreme-value tables and warning maps, aurora (Kp-index) forecasts with visibility probabilities for Germany, and a bioweather section. Wetterblick emphasizes organic growth in Google search, stating that it does not buy traffic and that users actively search for their weather and land on Wetterblick, which it says makes its reach plannable and sustainable. Its own server-side analysis reports rapid growth through spring and summer: from 16,000 visitors in March to 22,000 in April, 53,000 in May, 187,000 in June and more than 360,000 in July (about +93 percent month over month), with visits rising from 26,000 in March to 35,000 in April, 80,000 in May, 256,000 in June and 497,000 in July (about +94 percent), and page views rising from 203,000 in March to 420,000 in April, 534,000 in May, 863,000 in June and 996,000 in July (about +15 percent). The founder closes the account with a note of thanks to those who accompanied him on the journey.
