Overview
Wentworth Mansion® is a historic luxury hotel in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Built in 1886, it is described as one of Charleston's most celebrated historic hotels, with 21 individually designed rooms and suites. Originally the grand home of Francis Silas Rodgers, the restored Mansion offers award-winning dining and amenities including a complimentary Southern breakfast at Circa 1886 Restaurant, afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres, and evening port, sherry, and brandy.
History
Wentworth Mansion® was built in 1886 as the grand home of Francis Silas Rodgers, a wealthy cotton merchant, phosphate manufacturer, and shipping magnate. In 1881, Rodgers set out to build an elegant home in Charleston, South Carolina, and in 1886 commissioned architect Daniel G. Waynes to design one of Charleston's grandest private residences. Built in the Second Empire style at 149 Wentworth Street, the Mansion became one of the city's most remarkable architectural landmarks. Francis Silas Rodgers and his wife, Marie Elizabeth Cochran, raised their 13 children within its walls. In 1920, members of the Rodgers family sold the home to the Scottish Rite Cathedral Association for $100,000. The Scottish Rite Masons kept the home until 1940, when it was sold to The Atlantic Coast Insurance Company, serving as the company headquarters. The beautifully restored Mansion now operates as a 21-room historic luxury hotel.
