Overview
Weird Truth Productions is a Japanese independent record label founded in 1999 by Makoto Fujishima. It began as a vehicle to release a split tape between Fujishima's one-man project Nyarlathotep and Woods of Gnome/Hurosoma, a one-man band from Osaka. Initially intended only for Fujishima's own projects, the label soon expanded to compilations and then to releases by other artists. A turning point came in 2002 with the release of Mournful Congregation's "The Dawning of Mournful Hymns," after which Weird Truth became widely regarded as a doom metal label. Despite this association, the label has also released death metal, thrash metal, and depressive black metal. It remains a DIY underground operation, issuing CDs, digi-CDs, and limited editions, with recent releases including Ataraxie's "Le Déclin" (2024), a split by Terrorakt and Begräbnis (2024), and Miasma Death's "Reflection in the Dark Water" (2024).
History
Weird Truth Productions was established in 1999 by Makoto Fujishima. At the time, Fujishima had a one-man band called Nyarlathotep, playing bizarre death/doom. A year or so before founding the label, he was contacted by Woods of Gnome/Hurosoma, another one-man band based in Osaka, Japan's second-largest city. Finding a kindred spirit, they agreed to release a split tape, and Fujishima started the label to put it out. Initially, he intended to release only his own band's material through Weird Truth and had no clear concept for the label. A year later, he released the compilation CD "The True Ideal Realized through the Underground Pt.2"; part 1 had been released by three Japanese labels—Bloodbath Records, Blow You Away Productions, and Underground Warder Productions—and featured Nyarlathotep. More compilations followed in 2000. In 2002, Weird Truth released "The Dawning of Mournful Hymns" by Mournful Congregation, which proved a turning point. Fujishima had long been a fan of the band's demos "Weeping" and "An Epic Dream of Desire." After hearing from Mad Max of Worship—whose first demo's Japanese edition Weird Truth had released—that Worship would release a split with Mournful Congregation, Fujishima got in touch and arranged to release something. It ended up being "The Dawning of Mournful Hymns," though Mad Max passed away before the release. This album led many to regard Weird Truth as a doom label. In fact, the label has also released death metal and thrash acts such as Throneum, Crucified Mortals, Sanctifier, Basilisk, and Deadly Spawn. The label continues to operate as a DIY underground entity, issuing new extreme metal releases, including in 2024 albums by Ataraxie, Miasma Death, and a split by Terrorakt and Begräbnis.
