Overview
Weingut Pfaffl (Weingut R&A Pfaffl) is a winery in Stetten, Lower Austria. Its official site states that the estate stands for peppery Grüner Veltliner and elegant red wines, and that the wines are highly valued in Austria and internationally. The estate's history page records that Roman and Heidi Pfaffl married in 1978 and took over the family farm with 0.75 hectares of vines, and that the first bottling of 200 bottles of quality wine followed in 1983.
History
According to the estate's history page, 1978 was the starting point: Roman and Heidi Pfaffl married and took over the parental farm with 0.75 hectares of vineyards, 23 hectares of grain, potatoes and sugar beets, seven bulls, 47 pigs and a small Buschenschank. They bought a house in the nearby town of Korneuburg and in 1979 opened the Heurigen 'Laterndl Pfaffl' there. In 1983, convinced that first-class wines could be produced locally, Roman filled 200 bottles of quality wine for the first time; both wines won gold at the Lower Austrian regional wine evaluation and were soon sold out. In 1987 Roman designed the distinctive white rhombus label with paper and pencil, which has since adorned the wines with only minor adjustments. In 1989, in a spontaneous action, he bought seven hectares of fine vineyard sites that were overgrown and had to be replanted, while the estate was farming five hectares of vineyards at that time. In 1991 the first exports began: summer holidays in Carinthia were used to make contact with restaurateurs, leading to a friendship with Valentin Latschen, who recommended the wines to his school friend Anton Viehhauser, a wine merchant in Hamburg, so that the first delivery to a wine merchant became an export transaction. By 2000 the estate had 40 hectares.
