Overview
Weekly Diamond (週刊ダイヤモンド, Shūkan Daiyamondo) is a Japanese weekly business and economics magazine published by Diamond, Inc. (ダイヤモンド社). First launched in May 1913 as a monthly titled Diamond (経済雑誌ダイヤモンド), it is one of Japan's oldest continuously published business periodicals. The magazine was founded by Ishiyama Kenkichi, and its name was reportedly chosen by Ikeda Tōshirō with the aspiration that it would be "small but carry considerable authority." Over the decades it shifted from monthly to semi-monthly (1946) and then to weekly (1955), and in 1968 it adopted the title Weekly Diamond. Its readership is centered on executives and corporate officers, and it is known for data-driven, ranking-oriented coverage that differs from general news weeklies. In recent years the magazine has undergone significant structural changes. In April 2025 it ended sales through bookstores and convenience stores, repositioning itself as a subscription-based magazine; the logo was changed from "Diamond" to "Diamond WEEKLY," the cover design was renewed, and the binding switched from right-bound vertical to left-bound horizontal. Although it retains the "weekly" name, the subscription is for 36 issues per year, reflecting a publication pace of roughly two to four issues per month. In August 2026 Diamond, Inc. announced a full digitalization plan, and the print edition is scheduled to end with the April 3, 2027 issue, after which it will be published entirely digitally. The magazine is also linked to the paid subscription service Diamond Premium, which offers digital access to current and back issues along with other content.
History
Weekly Diamond was founded by Ishiyama Kenkichi and first appeared on May 10, 1913, as a monthly magazine titled Diamond (経済雑誌ダイヤモンド). The inaugural issue was priced at 10 sen per copy. The name was chosen by Ikeda Tōshirō, who wanted the magazine to be "small but carry considerable authority." After a five-month suspension, it resumed publication on November 1, 1945, and in September 1946 it shifted to a semi-monthly (旬刊) schedule. In March 1955 it became a weekly. In 1968 the magazine underwent several changes: the January 15 issue changed its subtitle from "経済雑誌" to "ビジネス活動に役立つ経済誌," the February 26 issue renamed the magazine to Weekly Diamond, and the July 1 issue dropped the subtitle. During the 1970s and early 1980s it ran a column called "なんでもランキング" (Anything Ranking), a title that later spread to other media and the internet; in the October 7, 2000 issue it ran a feature titled "ニッポンなんでもランキング." In 2019, Diamond, Inc. launched the paid subscription Diamond Premium, which included access to the digital edition of Weekly Diamond's latest and back issues. In April 2025, the magazine ended bookstore sales and relaunched as a subscription-based magazine, changing its logo to "Diamond WEEKLY," renewing its cover design, and switching to left-bound horizontal binding. Although called a weekly, the subscription covers 36 issues per year, reflecting a publication pace of two to four issues per month in fiscal 2024. On August 27, 2026, Diamond, Inc. announced full digitalization, and the print edition is scheduled to end with the April 3, 2027 issue, after which it will be published entirely digitally. The magazine has also faced legal issues: a 2005 article critical of JASRAC led to a defamation lawsuit in which the Tokyo District Court ordered Diamond to pay 5.5 million yen in damages; a 2010 feature on religion and money resulted in a 2012 Kyoto District Court order to pay 2.2 million yen; and in February 2025 the magazine abruptly canceled general sales of an issue and apologized for a typographical error related to a survey on advertising in the Fuji TV improper entertainment scandal.
