Overview
WEAR-TV is a broadcast television station licensed to Pensacola, Florida, and serving the wider Mobile–Pensacola market across northwest Florida and southwest Alabama. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 3 and has historically operated as the market's principal ABC affiliate. According to the cited station history, NBC programming was added to WEAR's second digital subchannel in October 2025 as part of a broader restructuring of Sinclair Broadcast Group's Mobile-area operations. WEAR is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and is operated alongside WFGX, an independent station carrying MyNetworkTV programming, while Sinclair also provides operational services for WPMI-TV and WJTC through arrangements involving Deerfield Media. The station began broadcasting on January 13, 1954. Its original ownership was connected to WEAR radio and WCOA radio, both of which had sought a television allocation on channel 3 after the Federal Communications Commission lifted its freeze on new television applications. WEAR initially carried CBS as its primary affiliation and ABC secondarily. After WKRG-TV entered the market in 1955 as the area's CBS station, WEAR became an exclusive ABC affiliate, a role it retained for decades. WEAR was sold to Rollins Telecasting in 1959. Rollins completed a transmitter-tower project in Baldwin County, Alabama, improving the station's coverage across the geographically broad market. Rollins later became part of the corporate chain that developed into Heritage Media. In 1997, WEAR and the other Heritage broadcast stations were sold to Sinclair. The transaction preserved WEAR's ABC affiliation while the market's former NBC station, WALA-TV, became a Fox affiliate. The station's programming operation is centered on local news, weather, sports, and community coverage, with particular emphasis on Pensacola and the Florida side of the market. Its studios on Mobile Highway in unincorporated Escambia County also accommodate WFGX and certain shared technical and production functions for stations serving Mobile. WEAR maintains a Mobile bureau and has increasingly shared resources with WPMI-TV, including production of some WPMI weekend newscasts after WPMI's operations were reduced. The station also produces local news for WFGX. WEAR has been a significant participant in local television news competition. It introduced a 4 p.m. newscast in 2007, converted its newscasts to high definition in 2008, expanded its weekday morning program in 2013, and launched a 9 p.m. newscast on WFGX later that year. That WFGX newscast ended in 2021 when Sinclair introduced a nationally produced evening news format on secondary stations. In 2025, WEAR introduced The Morning Current on WFGX and later moved NBC programming to WEAR's digital subchannel, consolidating more of the market's NBC operation under Sinclair's control. The station's call letters are pronounced individually as W-E-A-R rather than as a word. Its terrestrial signal transitioned from analog VHF channel 3 to digital UHF channel 17 on June 12, 2009, while retaining virtual channel 3. WEAR remains an active local broadcast brand focused on news, weather, regional information, and network television distribution.
History
WEAR-TV's origins date to the reopening of television licensing in the United States after the FCC's four-year freeze on new applications. In 1952, WEAR radio and WCOA radio each applied for a television station on channel 3 in Pensacola. WCOA withdrew its application in June 1953 as part of an arrangement that also allowed WEAR to withdraw a separate application for channel 36 in Jacksonville, clearing the way for WJHP, a WCOA-related station, to obtain that allocation. WEAR subsequently received authorization to build on channel 3. The station signed on January 13, 1954. It began as a primary CBS affiliate with a secondary ABC relationship. This arrangement changed in 1955 when WKRG-TV launched as the CBS affiliate for the Mobile–Pensacola region. WEAR then became an exclusive ABC affiliate, establishing the central network identity that defined the station for most of its history. In 1959, WEAR was sold to Rollins Telecasting. Rollins completed a transmitter construction project that had already begun, including a tower in Baldwin County, Alabama. The site helped the station serve communities on both sides of the Florida–Alabama market boundary. Rollins was later acquired by Heritage Communications, a company involved in cable television. After Tele-Communications Inc. acquired Heritage's cable properties in 1987, management completed a leveraged buyout of the broadcast division, creating Heritage Media. The Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired WEAR and the rest of Heritage's television stations in October 1997. The sale occurred as the remaining Heritage business was being combined with News Corporation. Sinclair's acquisition kept WEAR in the ABC family. It also helped preserve the market's emerging network alignment: WALA-TV, formerly a major NBC outlet, became a Fox station rather than forcing WEAR to change to Fox. Sinclair's ownership produced both programming and distribution controversies. In 2004, Sinclair barred its ABC stations from carrying a Nightline broadcast that displayed the names of U.S. military personnel killed in Iraq. The company characterized the broadcast as anti-war advocacy. In distribution, WEAR was removed from Mediacom systems in January 2007 after the cable provider and Sinclair failed to agree on retransmission fees. The station returned in February after a new agreement. A second dispute was possible when the agreement expired at the start of 2010; Sinclair granted a short extension so viewers could receive college football games, and the companies subsequently reached a one-year arrangement. Sinclair's footprint expanded in the market in 2012 when it acquired five Newport Television stations, including WPMI-TV and WJTC. Because Sinclair already owned WEAR and WFGX, WPMI and WJTC were transferred to Deerfield Media and operated by Sinclair through local marketing arrangements. This created an unusual structure in which two major-network stations were operated by the same company. The operations initially remained substantially separate, although WPMI and WJTC master-control functions moved into WEAR's facility in 2017. Beginning in April 2023, WEAR also produced or supported weekend NBC 15 newscasts for WPMI, either as simulcasts or recorded programs when schedules conflicted. WEAR has steadily expanded its local news output. It added a 4 p.m. newscast in December 2007 and introduced high-definition local news in September 2008. Its weekday morning broadcast, 3 in the Morning, was extended to begin at 4:30 a.m. in July 2013. In August 2013, WEAR launched a half-hour weeknight newscast on WFGX at 9 p.m.; the program ended in 2021 after Sinclair introduced The National News Desk on secondary stations. In September 2025, WEAR launched The Morning Current, a one-hour morning-news extension on WFGX. A major technical and programming restructuring followed on October 20, 2025. NBC 15 moved from WPMI's primary signal to WEAR's 3.2 digital subchannel, while Roar moved to WPMI's primary channel, Charge! moved to WPMI's 3 subchannel, and The Nest was assigned a new WPMI subchannel. WEAR's former 3.3 service was removed to permit high-definition carriage of NBC on 3.2. The related NBC 15 and UTV44 operation in Mobile continued. Separately, WEAR completed the U.S. television transition from analog to digital on June 12, 2009, ending analog broadcasting on VHF channel 3 while retaining virtual channel 3 through its digital UHF signal.
