Overview

The Wise Company (stylized The Wise Co., also known as The Wise Store) was a department store based in Long Beach, California. Its origins trace to 1894, when founder W. H. "Herb" Wise opened a grocery store at Cherry Avenue and Third Street. In 1902 he opened "The Cash Store" grocery at Pine and First Street, and the business gradually expanded into dry goods, linens, and furniture. In 1925 Wise purchased The Wall Company department store, renamed the business The Wise Company, and opened a new 57,000-square-foot store at 113–123 Broadway. A larger Art Deco building at 216 Pine Avenue opened in 1929, adding 135,000 square feet of floor area. Wise retired and closed the store in 1934. The building later housed other retailers, including Montgomery Ward, but remained largely vacant for decades and was seen as a blight on downtown Long Beach. It still stands today, refaced with glass and steel.

History

The Wise Company began in 1894 when W. H. "Herb" Wise opened a grocery store at Cherry Avenue and Third Street in Long Beach, California. In 1902 he opened "The Cash Store" grocery at Pine and First Street, offering the first grocery delivery by motor vehicle in Southern California. The store expanded into dry goods, linens, and furniture, and moved to larger locations in 1906 and 1911. In 1925 Wise bought The Wall Company department store, renamed the business The Wise Company, and opened a new 57,000-square-foot store at 113–123 Broadway. In 1929 a larger Art Deco building at 216 Pine Avenue opened, adding 135,000 square feet. Wise retired and closed the store in 1934. The building was mostly vacant for decades, though Montgomery Ward operated in part of it until 1958. Various attempts to revive the building failed, and it was considered a blight on downtown Long Beach. The building still exists, refaced with glass and steel.
