History

WCT Group was first established with the incorporation of WCT Earthworks & Building Contractors Sdn Bhd on 14 January 1981. The company was founded by two brothers, Wong Chew Lai and Wong Sewe Ling, together with two close friends, Chan Soon Huat and Peter Taing Kim Hwa. The initials in the WCT name and logo reflect these founders: W for the Wong brothers, C for Chan Soon Huat and T for Peter Taing Kim Hwa. From humble beginnings as a one-machine company involved in earthworks, the group grew steadily in size, scope and strength. WCT Berhad made its debut on the Second Board of the then Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad) on 16 February 1995. It was subsequently promoted to the Main Market of Bursa Securities on 7 January 1999. Over the years, the company evolved into one of Malaysia's leading engineering and construction companies and property developers. A major milestone came on 8 July 2013, when WCT Berhad successfully undertook an internal reorganisation that transferred its listing status to a new holding company, WCT Holdings Berhad. This allowed the group's various business operations to fall under the newly listed entity. WCT Holdings Berhad is an investment holding company that also provides management services to its subsidiaries and joint venture companies. Its three core businesses are Engineering and Construction, Property Development, and Property Investment and Management. The group's engineering and construction expertise spans racing circuits, airports, water supply and dam schemes, highways and expressways, civil works, rail-based infrastructure and specialised buildings such as shopping complexes, hospitals and government administrative centres. Notable completed projects include the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor (1998), the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir (2004), the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi (2009), Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Sabah, and gateway@klia2 in Selangor. WCT has also been the main contractor for mega projects in Malaysia, including the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and the Pan Borneo Highway upgrade package 9 (Sg. Arip to Simpang Lapangan Terbang Bintulu) with KKB Engineering Berhad. The property development portfolio covers townships, luxury residences, high-rise residential, integrated commercial developments, office towers, hotels and shopping malls. WCT owns five shopping mall chains: Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre in Klang, gateway@klia2 and SkyPark Terminal in Selangor, and Paradigm Mall in Petaling Jaya and Johor Bahru. The group also owns hotel companies operating Première Hotel in Klang and New World Petaling Jaya Hotel in Petaling Jaya. In 2018, WCT ventured into the development and management of infrastructure and commercial and aviation facilities at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor. In recent years, WCT has been active in sustainable construction and has received various green building accolades for its projects, including LEED Silver Certification under LEED 2009 for Core and Shell for gateway@klia2; Green Building Index (GBI) Gold for the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI) Headquarters; GBI Silver for Lot 2C5, Putrajaya (Commercial Office Building); and GBI Certified for MyTOWN Shopping Centre.
