Overview
Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG is a German construction company that describes itself as part of the Zech Group, within which it represents the engineering construction (Ingenieurbau) business. It states it is primarily active in the German engineering construction market and the international tunnelling market, and reports a construction output of about €900 million. Its services include civil engineering, tunnelling, specialist foundation engineering, building construction, bridge construction, pipeline construction, structural maintenance, environmental technology and partnership models. It operates through three regional divisions: North (based in Hamburg with a Berlin location), Central (based in Düsseldorf) and South (based in Munich with locations in Passau and Stuttgart). Its history traces back to 1875, when Conrad Freytag and his brother-in-law Carl Heidschuch founded the Offene Handelsgesellschaft Freytag & Heidschuch in Neustadt an der Haardt.
History
The company's history traces to 15 June 1875, when Conrad Freytag and his brother-in-law Carl Heidschuch founded the Offene Handelsgesellschaft Freytag & Heidschuch in Neustadt an der Haardt (today an der Weinstraße). Around 1880 the firm was already operating as a 'Cementröhrenfabrik' (cement pipe factory) and 'Baumaterialienhandlung' (building materials business). In 1884 Conrad Freytag acquired the Monier patent, which the company describes as the birth of reinforced concrete construction. In 1885 Wayss met Conrad Freytag and Carl Heidschuch at the 'Pfälzer Hof' in Ludwigshafen, where they gave him the Monier patent for North Germany free of charge. On 30 April 1887 Freytag & Heidschuch oHG founded a company health insurance fund (Betriebskrankenkasse), which continued in the successor stock corporation from 1900. Matthias Koenen (1848–1924) is described as the intellectual father of reinforced concrete construction in Germany. Today Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG states it is part of the Zech Group, in which it represents the engineering construction business.
