Overview

The Waxeneckhaus is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) in the Gutenstein Alps of Lower Austria, situated on the southern slope of the Waxeneck near the Geyersattel. It lies within the municipality of Pernitz and is operated by the Naturfreunde (Touristenverein Naturfreunde), a Austrian outdoor recreation organization. The hut was built in 1919 and 1920 by the Berndorf and Pottenstein local groups of the Naturfreunde, and after the association was dissolved in 1934, it was renovated and expanded after 1945 by the re-established local group. Today it offers overnight accommodation and a heated seminar room for 25 people, and serves as a stage destination on the Way of the Vienna Alps (Weg am Wiener Alpenbogen). Since 18 July 2015, Susanne and Karl-Heinz Rottensteiner have managed the Schutzhaus Waxeneck. The hut is open year-round from Thursday to Sunday starting at 9:00 AM, with breakfast served until 11:00 AM and warm meals available in the afternoon. It is accessible on foot via forest roads from the Hals pass or from Pernitz via Feichtenbach, and also by car. The Waxeneckhaus is a popular destination for hikers, families, and seminar groups, offering a children's playground and traditional Austrian mountain hut cuisine.

History

The Waxeneckhaus was constructed in 1919 and 1920 by the Berndorf and Pottenstein local groups of the Touristenverein Naturfreunde (TVN), a workers' hiking and outdoor organization. It was built as a Schutzütte (mountain hut) on the southern slope of the Waxeneck in the Gutenstein Alps, near the Geyersattel, within the municipality of Pernitz in Lower Austria. In 1934, the Naturfreunde association was dissolved, and the hut's operations were interrupted. After 1945, the re-established local group renovated and expanded the Schutzütte. Over the decades, the Waxeneckhaus became a stage destination on the Weg am Wiener Alpenbogen (Way of the Vienna Alps), a long-distance hiking trail. It is accessible on foot via forest roads from the Hals pass or from Pernitz via Feichtenbach, and also by a small path from Pottenstein over Grabenweg along the ridge above Grabenweg. Another hiking route (2)01 leads from Weissenbach an der Triesting over the settlement Am Brand and the Rote Kreuz, crossing the Hals pass road. Today, the hut offers overnight accommodation and a heated seminar room for 25 people. It features a children's playground and is a popular destination for hikers, families, and seminar groups.
