Overview
WWZ AG (formerly Wasserwerke Zug AG) is a regional energy, telecommunications and water utility headquartered in Zug, Switzerland. Its origins trace back to 1878, when the water supply of Zug was established, and the joint-stock company Wasserwerke Zug was founded in 1892. Since its founding it has operated as an Aktiengesellschaft (joint-stock company). The holding company WWZ AG is owned by roughly 5,000 private shareholders, with public authorities holding just under 30 percent of the share capital. The company is headquartered in Zug and employs over 550 people across the WWZ Group, making it one of the 100 largest employers in Central Switzerland. In 2025 the WWZ AG generated revenue of CHF 312.3 million, with equity of CHF 980.0 million, corresponding to an equity ratio of 70.6 percent. The group's activities span electricity supply, telecommunications, water supply, gas, heat and cooling supply, and electric mobility. As an electricity supplier, WWZ serves more than 72,000 customers across ten Zug municipalities and Hochdorf (LU) through a 2,200-kilometre electricity grid. In 2018, 707 GWh of electricity was delivered within the grid area, and WWZ sold a total of 832 million kWh of electricity in the partially liberalised Swiss electricity market. Around 4 percent of the electricity it sells is produced by the company itself in seven own hydroelectric power plants on the Lorze river and with 22 photovoltaic installations in the Zug region; the remainder is purchased from regional third-party producers, acquired through participations, or bought on the market. In 2020, the electricity mix of WWZ Energie AG consisted of 21.46% nuclear power, 70.2% hydropower, 1.22% solar energy and 7% subsidised electricity. In telecommunications, WWZ supplies over 60 municipalities in the cantons of Zug, Zurich, Aargau, Lucerne, Schwyz and Bern with telecommunications services via its own fibre-optic cable network and partner networks, making it one of the leading cable network companies in Switzerland. Its nearly 3,200-kilometre networks are continuously expanded and offer 1 Gbit/s at every connection. Since 2020, WWZ has been driving the nationwide expansion of FTTH (Fibre to the Home) to enable faster internet speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s. Under its telecommunications product brand Blizz, WWZ offers internet television (IPTV), digital cable television, fibre-optic internet, and mobile and fixed-network telephony. The basic encryption for digital cable television was abolished in mid-2012. Overall, the WWZ Group supplies over 126,000 connections and is a member of the Digital Cable Group. In the gas business, WWZ distributed a total of 513 GWh of natural gas (2019) through its 282-kilometre network in 16 municipalities. In the city of Zug and in Affoltern am Albis, the company also operates three natural gas/biogas filling stations. By default, the company mixes 5 percent biogas into the natural gas; customers can increase this proportion. In the heat and cooling business, WWZ has been active since the 1990s. In 2019, the company produced 31.1 GWh of heat and cooling. WWZ today operates a wood heating network in the Zug municipality of Menzingen, three district heating networks in the Zug municipality of Cham, and the district heating network in Zug's old town. In 2017, a wood heating network was added to supply the village centre of the Zug municipality of Steinhausen. In mid-2017, WWZ began construction of the Circulago energy network, a generational project that was commissioned in 2020 and whose final expansion is planned for 2040. In electric mobility, WWZ operates 34 public and semi-public charging points in the Canton of Zug and the Lucerne municipality of Hochdorf, including the region's first fast-charging station (in Rotkreuz) since 2018. In 2019, around 110,000 kWh of regional solar power was charged at WWZ's charging stations.
History
The origins of WWZ date back to 1878, when the water supply of Zug was established, marking the beginning of water supply in Zug. In 1891, the first power plant was built in the Lorzentobel. In 1892, the joint-stock company Wasserwerke Zug was founded, and in 1893 electric street lighting was introduced in Zug. The company's initial purpose was to reliably supply the population and businesses in Zug with water and electricity. In the 1970s, the company began building its television network, which became the basis of today's nationwide fibre-optic cable network. In 1973, the cable TV network was established. In 1990, WWZ connected the region to the European natural gas network. In 1998, internet via TV cable was introduced, followed by digital TV in 2003, telephony via cable network in 2005, and HDTV in 2007. In 2010, the Menzingen wood heating network was established. In 2012, the telecommunications offering Quickline was introduced and Swiss hydropower was launched as the standard electricity supply. In 2013, mobile telephony was introduced. In 2015, the Herti substation was renewed. In 2016, the holding company Wasserwerke Zug AG was renamed WWZ AG. In 2017, WWZ celebrated its 125th anniversary and construction began on the Circulago energy network. In 2018, the bandwidth expansion to a nationwide 1 Gbit/s started. In 2020, the Circulago energy network was commissioned and smart charging solutions with electric mobility were introduced. In 2021, construction began on the Ennetsee heating network. In 2022, a partnership with Otto Fischer in the field of electric mobility was formed. In 2023, Databaar was acquired. In 2024, the Unterfeld energy centre was opened. In recent company history, the business areas of electric mobility and heating/cooling have been added. The company has grown from a local water and electricity supplier into a diversified regional utility group.
