History
Waskönig+Walter was founded in 1873 by textile master Johann Peter Waskönig in Elberfeld, today part of Wuppertal, with two employees. The company initially manufactured hat wires and flower wires. As staff and production grew, it relocated within Elberfeld in 1898. Shortly afterwards, Peter Waskönig, the founder's first-born son, joined the business. In response to declining demand for hat and flower wires, production was switched to dynamo wires in 1918. With Eugen Waskönig, son of Peter Waskönig, the third generation entered the company in 1935. In 1937 Friedrich Walter became his equal partner, giving rise to the company name Waskönig + Walter. The transition to the fourth generation took place in 1955 with the entry of Peter Waskönig. In 1958 Waskönig + Walter took over the firm Adler-Kabel from Berlin. Due to space constraints, the company moved its location from Wuppertal to Ramsloh in 1971; a clothing factory had already been built there in 1964. Since 1978 the company has operated as Waskönig + Walter Kabel-Werk GmbH u. Co. KG. A further generational change occurred in 1991, when Peter Waskönig handed the company over to his sons Jörg and Michael Waskönig. In 2007 the logistics hall was completely destroyed by arson. The area was rebuilt and inaugurated in 2009 together with a fully automated high-bay warehouse. To celebrate the company's 150th anniversary in 2023, Waskönig + Walter announced the forthcoming entry of Theo Waskönig into the business. Milestones after the move to Ramsloh include the start of production of cross-linked PE cables (VPE cables) up to 1 kV in 1976; expansion of the production hall from 20,000 m² to 48,000 m² in 1991; the start of medium-voltage core production in 2002; construction of a high-voltage cable plant in 2009; and expansion of the production hall for 1 kV cables in 2025. The company describes itself as a family business that has combined quality, high-tech and service for more than 150 years, and in 2023 it ranked 67th in the Nord/LB ranking of the 100 largest companies in Lower Saxony.
