Overview

The Warner Theatre is a performing arts center in Torrington, Connecticut, described as Northwest Connecticut's largest performing arts center. Built by Warner Brothers Studios and opened on August 19, 1931 as a movie palace, it was then described as "Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre." It was sold in the 1950s as part of a federally mandated divestment and damaged extensively in the 1955 flood. Facing foreclosure, owners closed it in 1981 and put the property on the market for $275,000; with demolition slated for 1982, citizens formed the non-profit Northwest Connecticut Association for the Arts, Inc. (NWCAA) to save it. The theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has entered a long-term partnership with The Bushnell.

History

The Warner Theatre was built by Warner Brothers Studios and opened in 1931 as a movie palace, described then as "Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre." It first opened its doors on August 19, 1931. The theatre was sold in the 1950s as part of a federally mandated divestment and damaged extensively in the 1955 flood. With business declining, the invention of television, and expenses soaring through the 1960s and 1970s, deferred maintenance began to take its toll. Facing certain foreclosure in 1981, the owners closed the Warner and in March of that year put the property on the market for $275,000. With the theatre slated for demolition in 1982, a concerned group of citizens formed the non-profit Northwest Connecticut Association for the Arts, Inc. (NWCAA) to save the theatre. This group led a dramatic grass-roots campaign successfully raising the money necessary to purchase the Warner Theatre. Restoration of the main theatre included full upgrades of the building infrastructure, ADA improvements, complete renovation of the Main Street façade including installation of the 50-foot vertical sign, restoration of the original marquee, and installation of state-of-the-art lighting and sound. The Warner has entered a long-term partnership with The Bushnell.
