Overview

Walter Rau Neusser Öl und Fett AG (stylised WALTER RAU) is a German manufacturer of plant-based fats and oils headquartered in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia. The company traces its origins to 1887, when it was founded in Neuss as Ölmühle N. Simons Söhne by Nathan Simons, who had started his first mill at the Obertor in 1861. After a fire at the Neuss oil mill, production was relocated between 1909 and 1911 to the newly developed harbour area. In 1929 the Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke acquired the business to secure a new raw-material base for margarine production. It was renamed Walter Rau Neusser Ölwerke AG in 1933 and Walter Rau Neusser Öl und Fett AG in 1979. In 1999 the Rau family (heirs of Walter Rau) sold a majority stake to the Hamburg-based Peter Cremer Holding GmbH & Co. KG. In June 2012 the oil mill that had been operating since 1911 to produce crude rapeseed oil from rapeseed was shut down, and the seed storage building was demolished in 2015. As of 1 October 2016, the Bunge Group acquired 62.81% of the shares. The company's shares are not traded on a stock exchange; there are three shareholders: Bunge Deutschland GmbH (62.81%), Christian Carls (30.19%) and the Walter Rau Wohlfahrtsstiftung (7.00%). The firm operates an edible oil and fat refinery in Neuss. The plant site covers approximately 42,000 m² and is located at Hafenbecken 2 of the Neuss harbour. The complete refining process is carried out there, supported by degumming and deacidification units, bleaching units and deodorisation columns. For speciality fat production, the site has facilities for fat hardening, chemical interesterification and enzymatic interesterification. Several packaging lines handle various packaging types with fill volumes from 5 to 1000 litres. Walter Rau produces plant-based fats and oils. Around 50 different raw materials are processed into some 400 different products, including frying fats and speciality fats for the bakery, confectionery and dairy industries. The Walter Rau AG is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

History

The company was founded in Neuss in 1887 as Ölmühle N. Simons Söhne. Nathan Simons had started his first mill at the Obertor in 1861 and soon afterwards built a larger steam-powered roller mill. In 1929 the Walter Rau Lebensmittelwerke bought the company in order to open up a new raw-material base for margarine production. It was renamed Walter Rau Neusser Ölwerke AG in 1933 and Walter Rau Neusser Öl und Fett AG in 1979.
