Overview

WALDRICH COBURG is a Coburg-based manufacturer of large, high-precision milling, grinding and turning machines. According to its official website, it employs over 400 people and looks back on more than 100 years of history, producing XXL machines for customers worldwide. The company states it has invested more than 60 million euros at the Coburg site since 2006. Its history page records that engineer Adolf Waldrich and engineer Emil Hardt came to Coburg in 1919, took over a small factory with 20 staff, and founded the Globuswerke in February 1920.

History

According to the company's history page, engineer Adolf Waldrich (until then a partner in the firm H.A. Waldrich in Siegen) came to Coburg together with engineer Emil Hardt in 1919. They took over a small factory on Gerbergasse with 20 staff and founded the Globuswerke in February 1920. They initially repaired machine tools but soon began developing their own glass-working machines. In 1926, the business bought a plot with a factory building on Hahnweg (today's company headquarters) and relocated there. Emil Hardt left the company and the firm was then called "Maschinenfabrik Adolf Waldrich". The development of the oil-hydraulic drive was a breakthrough; this patented world first was presented at the Leipzig Trade Fair in 1936, and the workforce rose to 240 people. In the post-war period, the workforce was reduced to 50 due to the consequences of the war. Series production of planing machines, further development of the product program and continuous expansion of production brought the workforce back up to 347 by 1950. On 5 March of the same year, company founder Adolf Waldrich died at the age of 61. His son Otto then continued to run the company successfully. The planing machine program was expanded with combined grinding and milling machines and further new developments.
