Overview

Wafer Works Corporation (合晶科技股份有限公司) is a Taiwan-based semiconductor materials company established in 1997. Its official history says its founding team came from Silicon Valley in the United States and Taiwan’s semiconductor industry; it does not identify an individual founder. The company describes itself as a customer-oriented semiconductor materials supplier and says it has become one of the world’s top ten suppliers of semiconductor silicon-wafer materials. Its principal products are semiconductor-grade polished silicon wafers and epitaxial wafers. The company also presents SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafers and customized wafers in its product offering. Its capabilities span crystal growth through epitaxy, with product development and manufacturing directed toward customer specifications. Wafer Works says its materials serve power semiconductor devices, high-end CMOS products, advanced sensors, automotive and industrial applications, energy-management devices, communications products, MEMS, and digital logic and analog ICs. The company serves customers across Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia. It reports manufacturing centers in Taiwan and mainland China, alongside overseas sales and service locations and a U.S. subsidiary serving European and American markets. Its manufacturing footprint and development milestones include facilities and operations in Yangmei and Longtan in Taiwan, and Shanghai, Yangzhou, and Zhengzhou in mainland China. The company’s global operating headquarters moved to its Longtan facility in 2011. Wafer Works is listed on Taiwan’s Taipei Exchange, where its stock code is 6182. Its history also records a 2024 initial public offering of Shanghai Wafer Works Corporation on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market; this is a separate corporate listing described as part of the group’s history, not the listing venue for the Taiwan parent. The company emphasizes customer orientation, quality improvement, research and development, and sustainability. Its current official materials describe continued investment in capacity and advanced wafer solutions, including a 12-inch wafer plant project at Erlin in Taiwan.

History

Wafer Works Corporation was established in 1997. According to its official company history, its founding team came from Silicon Valley and Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and had substantial experience in the sector. The history records the acquisition of U.S. company Helitek Company Ltd. in 1997. In 1999, the Yangmei plant began production and the company’s global operating headquarters moved to Yangmei. The company was recognized as an important technology enterprise in 1998 and was recommended as a technology stock for over-the-counter listing in 2000. It began trading on Taiwan’s over-the-counter market in 2002. During the 2000s, Wafer Works expanded its product and manufacturing capabilities and developed its presence in mainland China. In 2004 it acquired a 75% interest in a mainland investment company, which was renamed Shanghai Wafer Works Corporation. Shanghai Jingmeng Silicon Materials completed construction and began epitaxial-wafer production in 2006. In 2007 Wafer Works acquired full ownership of Shanghai Wafer Works Corporation. Its official timeline records the completion of a Yangzhou transaction in 2015 and the consolidation of Shanghai, Jingmeng, and Yangzhou operations in 2016. The company also describes agreements and projects that led to the establishment of Zhengzhou Wafer Works. Product milestones included the development and production of heavily doped silicon materials and the expansion of polished and epitaxial wafer capability. In 2010, the Yangmei expansion raised the reported monthly capacity for eight-inch polished substrates to 60,000 wafers. In 2011, the global operating headquarters moved to the Longtan plant. The company’s timeline notes carbon-footprint certifications in 2012 and a number of product and capacity developments in later years. These included the start of eight-inch lightly boron-doped wafer shipments in 2017; SOI research samples and the start of eight-inch polished-wafer production in 2018; and a Longtan crystal-growth manufacturing and research center completed in 2020. In 2021, Zhengzhou began mass production of 12-inch polished wafers and launched 12-inch turnkey service. Longtan’s 12-inch research and production line and cleanroom were completed and opened in 2022. The company’s more recent history emphasizes new materials, capacity growth, and international corporate development. In 2023, it completed GaN-on-X research and began sending samples, started construction of the Erlin 12-inch plant, and broke ground on the second phase of its Zhengzhou plant. The company also reported sustainability recognitions and inclusion in Forbes Asia’s list of 200 best under-a-billion companies. In 2024, Shanghai Wafer Works Corporation completed an IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market. The official homepage later reported that the Erlin facility produced its first crystal ingot on April 30 and described the event as a step toward operating production of 12-inch silicon wafers. Wafer Works presents its development strategy as combining customer-oriented service, technical advancement, capacity expansion, quality management, and sustainability.
