Overview

Wadakanchery Municipality is an urban local government body located in Thalappilli taluk of Thrissur district, Kerala, India. It is situated about 20 kilometres north of Thrissur city. The municipality was formed on 14 January 2015 by merging the erstwhile Wadakkancherry and Mundathikode grama panchayats, following a widespread public agitation demanding municipal status for the area. The first elections to the municipality were held in November 2015. The municipality is administered under the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994 and the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992, which constitutionalized urban local governments in India. It provides citizen services such as birth, death, and marriage certificates, building permissions, property tax collection, trade licensing, and civil registration, largely through the K-Smart platform. The current chairperson is Mini Aravindhan, the vice chairperson is P N Surendran, and the secretary is T V Narayanan. The municipality is divided into 42 administrative wards. The official website is maintained by the Information Kerala Mission. The town is known for the Uthralikavu Pooram festival and the nearby Vazhani Dam, and it has a socio-cultural history tied to the royal rule of the Zamorin of Kozhikode.

History

Wadakanchery, located in Thalappilli taluk of Thrissur district, Kerala, was historically an area of strategic importance during royal rule. Records indicate a small centre of royal administration existed in Vadakkancherry, and some accounts suggest that the sites of the present government high schools and taluk offices were military bases. The army is said to have moved from here in agreement with the Kozhikode Zamorin to control the robber Choondal Nambi. Machattu Ilayath, the lord of Thiruvathirapattu, was born near this place, as were Kelathachchan and Mangatachchan, prime ministers of the Zamorin, and the Avanaparamba Manakkal Namboothiris, leading priests. The area also had a history of slavery. The first school in Vadakkancherry was a night school started about 120 years ago; it began as an ordinary primary school and became one of the first high schools established in the taluk during the rule of the Cochin Raja. Printing technology was also taught there. In the early days, most people relied on traditional medicine, and the Taluk Headquarters Hospital began functioning in Vadakkancherry in 1940. There were about 400 hectares of rice cultivation land, generally Irupoo fields, using local seeds such as Thavalakkannan, Chitteni, and Kattamoda. With the construction of the Vazhani Dam in 1959, irrigation facilities increased, and mechanization and new seeds brought some progress in rice cultivation. The main crops were paddy, coconut, kavung, and cashew. For a long time, the area remained a panchayat. A widespread agitation demanded that it be converted into a municipality. Subsequently, on 14 January 2015, Wadakkancherry and Mundathikode grama panchayats were merged to form Wadakkancherry Municipality. The first elections to the municipality were held in November 2015. The municipality is divided into 42 administrative wards. The current council was formed after the December 2025 local body elections in Kerala. The municipality operates under the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994 and the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992, which added Part IX-A to the Constitution of India, covering Articles 243-P to 243-ZG. The official website is developed and maintained by the Information Kerala Mission.
