Overview

wbv Publikation is the academic and specialist publishing division of wbv Media, an owner-managed German media and logistics company headquartered in Bielefeld. The business traces its origins to 1 October 1864, when Wilhelm Bertelsmann — son of the Gütersloh publisher Carl Bertelsmann — founded a book and lithographic printing house in Bielefeld under the name Gebrüder Bertelsmann. Over the following decades the operation evolved from a printer of newspapers and official forms into a specialist publisher and media service provider. Since 1993 the family business has been led in the fifth generation by W. Arndt Bertelsmann as managing partner, who introduced the wbv brand, standing for both W. Bertelsmann Verlag and its thematic focus on economy, education and administration. On 1 March 2018 the company renamed itself wbv Media, with wbv Publikation as its publishing arm. As a science and specialist publisher, wbv Publikation transfers content from teaching and research into practice. Its programme focuses on the humanities and social sciences, education, and administration and law. Specific subject areas include vocational and business education, educational and social research, empirical educational research, adult education, higher education and science, media education, writing studies, and school and special-needs education. Numerous major education studies appear under its imprint, including Bildung in Deutschland, PISA and Bildung auf einen Blick. The publisher also issues journals such as the Zeitschrift für Fremdsprachenforschung (ZFF), which has moved to Open Access, and blind-sehbehindert. wbv Publikation operates several imprints and partner programmes. ATHENA-Verlag in Oberhausen covers architecture, educational science, cultural education, cultural studies, art, art education, philosophy, special-needs education, and dance and theatre. Schneider Verlag Hohengehren in Baltmannsweiler contributes a renowned pedagogy and subject-didactics programme, while EUSL-Verlag in Detmold focuses on vocational and business education. The textbook programme of wbv Publikation is published in cooperation with utb. The publisher presents its list at academic conferences, trade fairs such as didacta, and digital book tables, and supports authors and editors with data and text preparation as well as a range of publication options. wbv Media describes itself as an independent, owner-managed family company with a long tradition, offering comprehensive media and logistics services alongside publishing. Its publishing activities are aimed at researchers, teachers, students and practitioners, with an emphasis on making scholarly content internationally visible and usable. The company also has a history of engagement with vocational education: in 1996 the W. Bertelsmann Verlag co-founded the association Innovative Berufsbildung e.V. with the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), which annually awards the Hermann-Schmidt-Preis.

History

The W. Bertelsmann Verlag was founded on 1 October 1864 by Wilhelm Bertelsmann, son of the Gütersloh publisher Carl Bertelsmann, as a book and lithographic printing house called Gebrüder Bertelsmann in Bielefeld. In its early years the company printed various newspapers, including the Allgemeiner Anzeiger für Bielefeld, Halle und Wiedenbrück, the Conservativer Volksfreund and the Westfälischer Hausfreund; Wilhelm Bertelsmann also served as editor of these papers. In 1870 the firm acquired the J. D. Küster printing works, which operated until 2021. From 1880 the business, which produced official forms — including the Ahnenpaß in the German Reich — and published, traded under the name Bertelsmann Buchdruckerei, W. Bertelsmann. Over the following decades the Bertelsmann Verlag developed from a forms publisher into a specialist publisher and media service provider. Since 1993 W. Bertelsmann Verlag and for its thematic orientation towards economy, education and administration. In 2014 the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. On 1 March 2018 the company changed its name to wbv Media. The wbv Publikation division publishes scholarly literature, especially in the social sciences and social research, education, vocational training, administration and law. For several years, until the print edition was discontinued, the company also produced the Deutschland Archiv on behalf of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung). In 1996 the W. Bertelsmann Verlag, together with the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), founded the association Innovative Berufsbildung e.V. The association annually awards the Hermann-Schmidt-Preis for projects in vocational education. The prize is named after Hermann Schmidt, who served as president of BIBB from 1977 to 1997.
